On the newly acquired 73 Duster, is it worth trying to lube it or would you guys just replace it? So much aftermarket junk out there. I'm looking for an OE cable. I can't nail down the part number though. Slant 6 auto. Assume 904.

Pull it out - put some grease on your fingers, and pull it thru, and return it. - If that don't work, then go from there.

I should just be able to disconnect it from behind the speedo and drop the cable out and pull out the cable right? Nothing keeping it inside the housing? No C clips etc? Thanks.

-- You should be able to pull it out at either end -- Speedometer - or - Transmission end. - Should come out freely. -- Spin it, in your fingers, to engage it, when you put it back in. --- Wrong - See Post #5 & 7 below.

the cable will not pull out from the trans end. You can pull it out from the inst' end but pushing it back in might not be so easy. The sheathe makes a nearly 90 degree turn under the drivers seat area. There is a small metal strap welded to the floor pan that was bent up to hold it there. this is where they wear the sheathe inside the most and generate debris. Best plan disconnect the sheathe at both ends. Pull it out from under that strap and let it hang down. Pull the cable out from inst' end. Flush sheathe with brake clean and compressed air. Lube and reassemble. I use white lithium grease.

I fixed this problem on my 1976 Dart Sport yesterday. I pulled out the cable, lubricated it and put it back in and it was much better but still had a little jump to it at low speeds. So I went to Autozone and was shocked at how inexpensive a new cable with housing is...$6.99 plus tax. After installing the new cable it now operates perfectly.
