I think the last bad hurricane hit them in 1988, or thereabouts. It was a Cat 4. Hopefully, the airport at Montego Bay won't suffer much damage so they can get some help afterwards. It's more towards the north side of the island, so maybe the storm surge won't hurt it too bad over there. That dang runway is short enough as it is!

Except the elevation of that airport is like, what...6 feet? Yes, that's an exaggeration, but that airport is pretty low....

Edit: Holy ****! I just "Googled it", and the actual elevation of the airport in Montego Bay varies between 4 to 6 feet!

That's the only commercial airport on the island I believe. The runway seems short and pretty exciting to land and depart being right on the ocean. I see it has been lengthened. Montego Bay 9908 ft. Longest at Minneapolis 11,06 ft. Heck our little regional airport in town has a 8399" runway and we have had Air Force 1 land here.
I saw an interview this morning of a local who is going to "hunker down and ride out the storm" He may be on the island for weeks if there is no way to get off the island. Wind damages or destroys the buildings and all the rain will cause slides and wash a lot of the island into the ocean. Even the hurricane hunter planes have turned around because of the high winds and turbulence. It's not good.

It's already supposed to be the strongest storm in that part of the world, on record.

It's been parked over them so long that they're already low on emergency supplies.

Prayers inbound, Jamaicans might become an endangered species over this deal.

Montego Bay Airport is where Jimmy Buffet 's private plane got shot up by the authorities, thinking he was a drug runner back in the 90s I believe.
I remember once leaving there ,on the plane taxiing out to therunway, all you see is ocean, and a bunch of little Jamaican kids pop up out of the rocks to play in the Jet Wash !

And it's still barely on the national news.

We are the News, think about that!
