trying to figure out whats the widest tires I can put on a 68 dart with a 8.75 rear end and stock wheels so they dont hit the fenders or leaf springs

Outer fenderwell is where the real problem is ! I've got 8" wide rims on the back, and if memory serves me right,I've got 245-60 - 15's on there !! But I did add new Leaf springs to keep the rear up off the sidewall of the tire !!

We couldn't fit a 29x9 slick on a 15x10 in our 68... Standard width a body 83/4 they fit bit to close for comfort so we mini tubbed.

Awhile back someone said 275/60R15 on their Valiant ('69?) with the 3/4" spring relocation kit. Do a quick search. Valiant may have different wheelwell size. Not sure. Plus that involves moving the spring pads in. I have a '69 Dart I plan to stuff fat tires under, too (all around). There's a '68 Valiant at the local yard I'm going to snag some stuff from tomorrow. I'll take some measurements for comparison.

If you have the stock wheels (like you said in your post), none of the above mentioned sizes will work.

Your stock wheels are more than likely a 14" x 4.5" so a 215-70-14 would even be a bit big.

I would stick with a 205-70 or 205-75-14.

If your car is a factory 340 with the 14 x 5.5" wheels, you can go a bit wider, like the 215-70-14 I mentioned.

Am I the only one that saw the OP mentioned "Stock Wheels"?

Do you think he will get 13-31s on a 14" x 5.5" wheel?

Hell...... All the other tire sizes offered in this thread are 15s. It would be damn hard to get a 275-60-15 in a 14" x 5.5" wheel.

Did not see the stock rim part. I got 235's on mine with the stock rallys. Looks like I could go up to a 245 max.

215 60 15 on stock rally wheel with about 4.25 backspace. Weak rear spring, occasionally rubs the wheelwell. With good springs could go a bit bigger. Had 255 60 15 tires on it and they rubbed even with airshocks.

OMG. Chill the f*$% out. Maybe Mopar2 should elaborate on what he means by "stock wheels" exactly. Even you were just speculating on what he actually has. Stock could mean whatever Chrysler offered during the main muscle years that are easy to get hold of. With those stock 14" wheel widths, there's no issue with available street tires for rub unless he wants to go with clown tires. Now 14" drag slicks (?), I don't know what's out there. Anyhow, fwiw, the wheel well on '69 Valiant measured wider than my '69 Dart by about 1/2" to 1/8" as both body lines taper slightly towards the rear. The Valiant has more of a flare to the lip, though. So, I guess technically you could stuff more tire under the Valiant. I imagine that's the same for '67 - '69 models - maybe others?

Here is the 68 valiant with the 275/60/15's just kind of mocked in place. the springs are moved in 3/4, and the "stock steel" wheels are ordered custom made with a 4.75 offset. 28'' tall is all youll get without moving the axle back or trimming the front wheel opening a bit.

That looks pretty nice but isn't that at full axle droop? What's it look like if you put the stands under the axles?

Yes its still on the stands. Those are suppose to be the increased ride height caltrac springs. Even if the tire does go into the wheel well i dont see it being a problem. it appears that there is plenty of room.

by stock wheels I mean stock wheels that came on a 68 dart, I have 14" wheel i think 6" wide currently with mickey thompson indy profile f70's but have a extra set of stock real wheels and wanted to put the largest available slick on that will fit under my car with NO modifications so I can run it at the track. so far I think im going with a 7.70" slick I found on summits site and thanks for the help and further input would be appreciated

The 14" x 6" are more than likely 14" x 5 1/2" (but could be a 14" x 4 1/2", you need to check for sure).

14 x 4 1/2 was the standard wheel.
14 x 5 1/2 was the standard wheel on performance models

For a 14" x 5 1/2" (or 6" ) wheel I wouldn't go more than a 225-70-14.

Sorry..... I just had a look at the tire you linked. It is 22.8" tall. That tire is very short. I wouldn't use it.

Mine isnt quite "stock", but on my 68 hardtop car I have Ralley wheels 15x7 and 275-60-15 with the inner wheel well trimmed. On the 68 converitble, I have 15x7 Ralleys and 255-60-15 with no mod to the inner side. Both are pretty close and are a bit of a trick to fit in when taking off or putting on.

You didn't move your springs in? How close are they? Have you had it on the road yet?

Ok guys, I'm out of this one...... This thread makes me want to pull my hair out.

The OP has 14" x 6" wheels (More likely 14" x 5.5" ). How will a 275-60-15 tire ever fit on that wheel?

With a spacer of course...

There might be a 275 tire for a 14" rim out there, but, it won't fit well on a 5.5" wheel My 245's are pinched in HARD on the 5.5" rallye wheel
