racerdan - that wheel/tire combo looks great! What is the backspacing on those rims? What are the front and rear tire sizes?

215 65r15 15x6 3.75 backspacing for the front, 245 60r15 15x7 4.0 backspacing for the rear. Small bolt pattern, about an inch of space between the rear tire and and springs (stock location, not narrowed). On a side note, these rims don't like the original dog dish hub caps, they go on but pop right off.

thanks gold68 and Tony, it filled up the wheel wells nicely. The stock size tire just looks puny compared to the large wells in the car. Now I'm undecided on leaving them flat black for the old rod look, or painting them the final color of the car TT1 avocado green.

Here's mine...freshly painted with new rubber

Here's what I have. The car now has rallye wheels. :burnout:

Wheel Vintiques small bolt 5x4", 15x6" front, 15x8" rear with 4.5" backspace. No spacers needed. Tires are 215 65 15 front, and 255 60 15 rear. Perfect clearances and great rear tire width and height.

Only thing was on the 15x8s, the nubs that hold the dog dish cap on needed to be ground in a little bit. The cap wouldn't 'pop' on, it pushed on and popped right back off on its own. Easy fix...

It looks to me as though there are two different styles of steelies. Most of them look round near the edge where the middle part meets the outer rim and some flatten out a bit. What is the cause of this difference?? Did they make the change in certain years???

Here is the difference I'm talking about: Pictures courtesy of member VDART.

Any ideas????

I think it depends on the 'duty' of the car, looks like the first rim has 4 nubs for the cap, and the different curvature tells me its more of a heavy duty design for a bigger car or truck possibly. The second looks like standard duty or possibly newer design like 1970+??

Right after I got it running, first time the car moved under it's own power since at least 1980.

I cleaned up the wheels and painted them black, had new tires installed, threw the wheel covers that came with it in a box and snagged a set of dishes off here. I like it but I'm going to have to go BBP soon due to axle swap and disc upgrade, so it will probably end up with the always classic Torq Thrust Originals, which I think look awesome on the pale yellow cars.
