The Dart started missing and then smoothed out but started knocking very loud. It's a high pitch knock not like a rod. Pulled the valve cover and #2 exhaust lifter could be pushed down like it was collapsed. All the others are fine. The valve is opening when turning the motor over. This is a 318 with roller lifters, replaced the lifter and still the same thing. Does this mean I have a plugged oil passage? If so how can I open it?
I'll post a video of the noise tomorrow,I'm at work now,
thanks
Bruce

are they the aluminium lifters and if so does it have over 75000 on it. if so i have herd you have to replace them withthe steel ones ??? thats what i have herd about them .

Thanks Mike You Da Man
I replaced one lifter that was collapsed but the noise didn't change. I have pulled the fuel pump no change, removed all belts noise got a deeper tone. Sounds like it's coming from inside the cover. I'm going to pull the valve covers again and recheck all valves.

After listening to it a few time's it is still hard to tell, But the worse could be the cam lobe is wore down or like BWDart said ,could it be the timing chain ?
I sure hope it's not a rode bearing wore letting the piston top out past the ring grove, and if the rod bearing is about gone, it would sound like it was coming out the front of the engine by way of the crank.
I wonder if your rocker is used up.

dam Mike that sounds like a push rod therw a rocker is my gess.
That was my first thought to, This is a non adjustable head I am sure so I wonder if the push rod got bent or the rocker is beat to death and worn and is about to let the push rod come through the rocker

Thanks Mike You Da Man

I was so happy I could help BWDart  I would look at the rocker arm under it, where the push rod is running and see how much wear there is there too
I hope for the best for ya bud

have you ever used a long screw driver for a sound probe ??
Put your ear on the handle and put the end of the screw driver over each of your intake runners and see if there is a deeper and bigger sound on one of them , The same this exhaust

I have the stethoscope ears I'll do more listening now that the fan is not spinning, it drowns out the sound with the wind noise.
I had the rockers off and nothing there all lifters are oiling and tight, by the way this is a roller motor if that makes any difference.

This is a roller cam, right? Swap the lifter with one from like #8. Sounds weird to me. All the lifters on that side are fed off the same galley. So it seems to me it should be a lifter issue. See if the noise follows it.

edit: Another thought... any chance something is hitting the spider near #2? Or a splash shield under the oil cap?

Yes it's a roller motor, had the valve covers off and nothing there all rockers are oiling, nothing loose, nothing hitting that I can see. After taking the belts off and running it the knock got deeper in tone, now sounds like rod or piston.

The rollers may be going bad….

Pull all the lifters and inspect. Sounds exactly like my roller cam when a roller lifter failed.
