So i pick up a unknown year 318 and 904 for $50 about two weeks ago. So i finally had a chance to take it apart. According to the numbers i have a 81-83 lock up trans. Im building a bone stock 360 carbed magnum to put in my 63 dart. The car has an 8 3/4, 2.76 gears and 205/70r14 in the rear. Is the trans worth rebuilding if it is Id be looking for a budget torque converter. Trying to keep cost down but i would like a good rebuild kit. Thanks for the help.

Yeah i figured but the converter price is what turning me away. $450 for off the shelf and i dont know if a stock converter is gonna be good enough. I drive my dart about 55 miles round trip, i might take it to the friday night drags maybe 3-4 nights a season.

The converter is the single most important part of an automatic car. Do you think you're gonna get good performance from one that's 99 bucks? Ain't happenin. Check out Precision of New Hampton. They have decent prices and will make what you want.

Yeah i know im just being cheap where i shouldnt. If i go custom built ill have more in the converter than i would in the motor and trans together but if i gotta do it i will. Any advise on where to get a good full rebuild kit for one. Ive been looking at fatsco and a couple of others.

PNH can hook you up. Look them up and call them. I don't see a need for something other than a stock converter with a stock engine.

Thanks for the info i have some places to check. Eventually the motor is gonna get aluminum heads and a nice cam and better gears but for now its a budget build just to get the tired slant out.
