lost 1st and reverse in 904

Friends 904 trans behind his slant. He wants to try to repair. Whats is the issue(s)????? Can he do it and he is not a mechanic!!

Yep. The least thing to do is pull the pan and look for the servo to band link laying in the pan.

Could be the lever broke or backed off from the servo to rear band in which case transmission would not have to come out. I have replaced them between time runs at the track in a stacker trailer.

So bring it to a trans guy and it could be fixable in the car. This is a common problem on these, but it depends what part failed.
Piston or strut failure, yes in car fix.
Broken band or linkage, no.

Mighta just blew the servo piston seal...sometimes you can fix them in the car; depending on single wrap or double wrap band.

FYI
The L/R band is NOT used for first gear, when the trans is in Drive. Instead, the overrunning clutch is the anchor.
