I got my manual steering box in stalled. I noticed that there isnt any oil in it. It smells like gear oil. Is gear oil what i should put in it & how much ?

Way back when working at a Dodge dealership we would use STP. That was from our Factory Rep if we got hard steering complaints.. Usually not much lube is in the box from the factory new or re-mans.
Lately I have been filling them with Luberplate white grease. Just a thought ..

The good book says to use a multipurpose 90wt gear oil. But most of us know it will drip out the lower sector shaft after time. I use the CV grease it stays put, and flows well when used.

I always used gear oil that has limited slip additive. Recently I have used synthetic type and it works great. Do not overfill leave room for fluid expansion from exhaust manifold radiant heat. Otherwise the steering column shaft seal will seep oil.

I believe @dadsbee filled his with Corn Head grease.
Yep, John Deere Corn head grease. It's a zero weight grease as was OE used originally.

You can warm it up and pour it in or grease gun with the zerk fitting removed. Stick the hose in the filler as far as you can get it and start pumping.

The "good books" 90w is a top up suggestion to the original grease fill.

I like the moly-disulfied wheel bearing grease, but, I always put that in when I have the box apart. Any box I've seen with any sort of oil inside was a leaker.

The box I used on Krusty, had basicly turned to hard grease. I dumped a couple ounces of 50wt in it, and went lock to lock a butt-load of times. It's smooth, now.
