The wife and I recently puchased a 1964 Dart GT to restore. As fate would have it I also scored on a rebuilt running 440 six pack (with trans $500, lucky me). So, been researching the internet to see if it is possible to put it in the dart. Looks like modified K frame, 9" rear end, bigger torsion bars, and a few other minor issues but nothing major (besides the $$). Anybody out there ever seen one or built one, I'm looking for advice on after market places for the K frame, whether or not I can get away with an 8 3/4" rear end or should I go to 9", OR AM I JUST PLAIN CRAZY! Advise thanx

8 3/4 with SG should handle that 440 just fine. Maybe a 3.55 ratio for all around fun? Don't forget frame connectors. Shifter?

yes to the 8.75
no to the 9"
frame connectors www.uscartool.com they are the best for early a's
I would not put a 440 into an early a. The engine bays are tight with a 273. 440 is big and heavy, guzzles the fuel, destroys the nice weight balance, and generally makes the car less pleasant in every way other than as a drag car.

I believe there is a forum thread on here for big block swaps into early a cars. Try a search.

440 in an early-a will be a squeeze. i like 9" rear ends, would run one over the 8 3/4 any day....but then again i am not a purist......

exhaust will be your biggest hurdle. they dont make a header off the shelf that will fit. your going to have to have something made custom.

Not me.................and I'm not starting a debate here, cause I've seen so many over the years on every mopar site that I've been on. I'm also a purist though....just me. To each there own. I'm sure you car is bad AZZ, but no phord or cheby stuff for me.

So to the original poster.........I would run the 8 3/4...........of course I've seen guys have 440's in front 8 1/4's for daily drivers in later A-bodies and they've seem to work just fine for them. I like the 8 3/4 set up just because it's easier to try different gears.

my two cents

look at craigslist (phoenix), there is a 8 3/4 for an abody in it right now! good price too!!
No , the ad is not mine LOL

Im no purist either, but at a cost standpoint, you can get a 8.75 cheaper than a 9". Finding a Mustang 9" that will fit without mods is harder than finding a A-body 8.75" dollar per dollar.

Have you thought about flipping the 6 pak 440? People will pay good money for it and you could buy a SB 360 or stroker SB and pocket some cash for other parts for the car.

Thanks for the info keep em comin'. I'm gonna go with the 8 3/4, have one in my 65 Cuda with a 355 posi, it truely is where the rubber meets the road. I'll have to demension out the engine bay and the 440 to see about space. the car is in storage in New Mexico right now, may be over New Years. Yes, I have been thinking about selling the rat motor, and I know if I stick it in there youo won't be able to turn the car without a crowbar, but I'd rather stay married if you know what I mean, the wife is a MOPAR nut just like me, used to have a 70 road runner, may be I can find a resto project to stuff that sixpack in,it also comes with a 727 bolted to it.
