Mustang 429 engines swap

-
Thanks for all the info! I have done a fair mount of internet research, but it is always nice to hear from folks who have lived it. I don’t know that I am really interested spending a lot of money just to make a lot of power. A 351 may well be the best deal, as many have suggested. I was more thinking of a nostalgia build, a 429 mustang is definitely out of the norm. With my friend having the engine I can get cheap, maybe I am just dreaming…..
Heck! Any day you can pickup a 429 for “cheap” is a Good Day, and I like your thinking, but if you’re not interested/are going to take a Pass on the engine….well….Kansas City is only 6 hours or so away from here……
I’m just sayin’!

A 429 is gonna come in around 720 lbs, a 351W comes in at around 525 lbs... The stock front suspension is pretty sketchy, a few simple mods can improve it & there are lots of aftermarket options, some are junk. others are well engineered & well executed.. But keeping 200 lbs off the front is always a benefit while at the same time preserving the room in the engine bay... Don't think I would waste my efforts putting a 429 in there...

Im doing a 340 build ...its not about the hp its cause I've always wanted a 340 car
I get it
Nothing more impressive then a big engine under the hood even if it could be beat by a little one

The 385 series is tough to beat. They're big and heavy, but they can make a LOT of power.

Put a set of Kaase Boss 9 heads on that 429 if you really want to pop eyeballs.
But then good luck working on it! If memory serves I’ve seen only 2 Boss 9’s in my life in person, and both times I couldn’t help but wonder how you’d ever work on it. But these days, if you can afford a Boss 9, my guess is you can probably afford to pay someone else to do the work for you!

Man, this thread is taking me down memory lane, and what I wouldn’t give to have my “Clevor” engine with the Kaase intake again. Got nothing to put it in right now, but I’m not against putting the cart before the horse!

Exactly. Save the 429 for a Galaxie, a truck, or a strictly drag car, and stick a high winding Windsor in there instead.

But not my project, and everyone has a dream, right?

Just like a Hemi, cause it is a Hemi. Cantankerous, moody and hard to work on.

I would love to know why the hell they decided having the spring on the upper arm was better. Only thing I could find on the web is that Ford originally intended the Falcon to be FWD and so needed space for the half shaft to pass through... Still, so dumb and they kept it for so long on so many cars. Hurts my head to look at.

I've seen a handful of Boss 429 and John Kaase Boss engine equipped Mustangs, including a late model Mustang, an S197 platform if I remember right that Kaase built for himself and a 73 sportsroof, plus 4 authentic 69 and 70 Boss 429s. Certainly an impressive sight.

I never liked or understood the reasoning behind that design, it was used on multiple platforms through the Ford lineup for years.

We had three here in Modesto back in the 70's... Actually two were still here in 2005... More recently they have been sold.. One year at our Graffiti show there were six Boss 429's, four Boss 302's & one Boss 351... long with a few Shelbys...
