This head was almost finished when a small hole opened up in the bowl so I had to start completely over.

I bet you did the Exhaust first on the replacement. Frustrating to lose all that time.

Edit: for some reason, I thought you said Ex. bowl. I really need glasses!

Definitely some great looking port work. Hate seeing problems arise like that when you have that much work in them. Any chance on being able to powder flow gas weld the hole up? Care to share the casting number for us amateurs?

Smog heads?..

Yep. And I only had one pair. I should have sonic checked the bowls becaus I know they are thin, but that's only a 2.02 valve in there. I figured I had it made in the shade.

One of the X or whatever heads that were on the car when I bought it was cracked. So I pulled the unbroken head off the shelf and ported that iron pig. So I have an X head on one side and smog head on the other.

I hate porting cast iron. My W2's will be the last I do.

I can get the casting number. It's a smog head with the EGR port drilled.

I thought about welding but when I dug around there I'd have to weld up the entire bowl. It's pretty thin on that one port. Figures.

That amount of porting on OE iron def falls into the “no thank you” category for me.

Okay..... who am I trying to kid.
I don’t really want to port any iron heads that far......OE or otherwise.

What does it flow?

I ported my current 596 heads, but I took the machine shops advice and didn't get too crazy...
I paid them a couple hours of time to touch up what I had done...

I forget what the exhaust did but the intakes were 270 at .500 and they dropped to 258 at .600 and stayed there. That's on a 2.02 intake and 50 degree seat. That's at 28 inches.

What made me real happy was reverse flow. I don't remember the exact numbers but they flowed way less in reverse.

I also tested them at 42 inches and they did very well there too. I can't recall those numbers but doing the math I lost very little from 28 to 42 inches.

So you ported a scrap pile head ? The W2's should make a nice winter project.

Yup. I'm not looking forward to the W2's. Those mothers are really hard. And I forgot to mention all the welding and porting I did on the Strip Dominator.

I'll have more work in the W2 SD because I'm going to weld up the flange to take a Dominator carb.

I have several holes in my head. I too old for this crap.

If they dropped 12 cfm from .500-.600 they are talking to you. You know what they need. Go for it.

I'm fighting off a migraine. I'll try and get the casting numbers and SSR in the morning. I'm fixing to take some migraine dope and that will put my lights right out.

Is that migraine from breathing the cast iron dust ? Nasty stuff !! Porting looks great .

I have 3 sets of J’s here waiting to go under the knife.
None will be getting anywhere near that much work.

I’m more into the “most for the least”, no holes/no epoxy type jobs.

I tell myself this every time, then it goes off the rails.
