Is the engine cammed?

Put a vacuum gauge on it and see what you have.

Big Voodo cam, Idle never gets above 10, fine at 2500 rpm.

Broke down and ordered a vac pump, I will let ya know if it works out.

Read up on Rhoads lifters. They are made for this, and give the added benefit of better mileage and low-end torque, without affecting the top end.
