My first car 72 Scamp

-
Picked up the 302 heads. They’ve been lightly ported and 1.88/1.60 valves put in. I plan to port a little more and put in new springs and send em. Got the headers back from the sandblaster and went ahead with VHT header paint in flat black and sprayed some VHT satin clear to give it a light sheen. Got the top of the water pump, housing and front of block touched up. Didn’t mask as well as I should have so I have some cleaning up to do. Finding the balance on where to stop is always tough lol. I like to do things once and do them right. But also know you can get carried away and never get it back together. Really hoping heads headers and the port work will wake this 318 up some more.

Did some port work on the 302 heads with the guidance of some friendly folks on this page! Didn’t get too crazy on it but made a lot more room. Blended the bowls some. Ported my intake just a little. It’s the performer intake which tapers at the end of the ports. I basically removed the taper. More pics to upload shortly.

Ended up having to have a valve job done. So had 3 angles done. Guides were good. New seals. I was able to reuse the springs so I was happy about that. Picked the heads up today.

A little before and after paint. Got the heads, intake, and bolts painted just as it started to sprinkle. Friend with a Mopar 10 Challenger came over to learn some stuff. He’s new to wrenching so I’m working on roping in another addict lol. Hoping to get my headers installed shortly then will work on getting the top end on.

So before project: factory small valve heads. Performer intake. Exhaust manifolds.
After project: 302 heads with 1.88/1.60 valves. Ported. Intake lightly ported. Headers. Might swap from 600 eddy to 650 Holley. Thanks for following!

Got the heads bolted down and the headers in. Man headers are a pain! Had a friend help me on this one. Scratched up the paint a little but not too bad. Zero dents put in! Gotta hook up my 90* oil adapter and wire my starter and I’ll be basically done underneath. Hoping to have the car on the road in the next week or two depending on time and if the exhaust shop can get me in.

Finally got it fired up! Ran into some issues with manifold Fitment. I think these 302 heads may have been milled a little. We wallered (redneck word) out the holes a little and got it to bolt down and seal. Fired it up open headers. Man it was a blast. Did a quick tune and brought it out for local cruise night. It’s funny you roll in uncapped and everyone notices. The vht paint did not hold up well as you can see in the pics. Will try brush on bbq paint next. Someday I’ll Cerakote them I think.

Car needs a little more timing and probably a little bigger carb. Traction became an issue for the first time ever so that’s fun. No leaks. Debating on adding some cutouts just for fun. Glad to finally have the car going again.

For anyone interested, HUGE difference going from rebuilt factory heads and manifolds to ported 302s and headers. Whole different animal. Need to do some detail work but it runs again. Very happy.

Good weekend in the Scamp. Got to see some good friends, hit a car show and cruise, and got to put some miles on the car. Also my car won it’s first trophy in my 18 years of ownership so that was cool. Local kids at the career center judged so I guess they appreciated something different. Black Challenger is my buddy’s Mopar 10. Few others Mopars and then another friend’s Chevelle. Perfect weather but now I got a header gasket leaking. Always something!

I thought I had posted an update on the thread but apparently haven’t. Since last post in this thread (wow 3 years?!) we’ve moved overseas. Not to worry, the Scamp is in good hands with my dad, another Mopar fan. Did one more burnout in the old hood, and went to my final cruise night, parking with the other Mopar guys. Went home and parked the car in the garage while wrapping up the American Graffiti soundtrack. Had a good time just reminiscing on how much of my life was influenced by cars, thanked the Lord for His blessings and the cool friends I’ve met along the way. Buddies and I towed the car to its new home for the cost of fuel and bbq. Dad sends me random updates on the car. He’s taking it to cruise nights and maintaining it fine. Little things I ignored to keep it from being torn down finally caught up and he got left holding the bag, albeit a small bag hahaha. Will post some more of the random cars we see in North Africa at some point. I’ve seen one A body here, a mid 60s dart in survivor driver condition.

Just stumbled upon this thread. I'm seeing a really nice memory making Scamp.
Those car pics with you standing next to your Dad are my favorite. :)
