My son won the Sportsman Class/No Electronics Footbrake
race today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

He prevailed over a stellar field including former Divisional and World Champion
racer as well as several Nationally competitive Stock and Superstock racers. He ran
his street legal 340 '68 Valiant against a field of purpose built race cars.

Jesus is Lord of All!

John, that's quite an accomplishment for Jon! Tough racing at vegas, many quality drivers there.

Congratulations to you and your son.
How about some pictures and basic specs of the Valiant?

Any pix of the valiant?
There are some on this Racer section.......Search under my posts.

It has been on Hot Rod Magazine Cover and detailed article. It was
invited to be displayed at Peterson Auto Museum. It was also selected
as one of the 50 most influential Hot Rods of the first 50 years of Hot Rod
Magazine.

It looks exactly as it did 30 or 40 years ago when it was built
and Street Raced every weekend with Big Willie and the LA County Street
Racer Club that I was Vice President. It has paid for the under 10K investment
in it many times over!

I am so very Blessed with the good memories from the Old Days!

It is a pump gas 340 with Edelbrock RPM heads and a 850 Demon Carb.
3:91 gear with my friend John Calvert's Springs and Bars. It will run 10's
when set up to do so thru the mufflers as run on the street.

Normally we run it in Pro on a two step and the out Hot Rod Project Feather
Duster in Sportsman on a brake petal. But there was not enough room in the 4 car
stacker. I was unable to get the Valiant to leave smoothly and consistently
on the brake petal, so we had to go deep to cut a light. Some of our competitors
realized this and attempted to go in first and block up the need time. We were just two
busy with helping race a dozen cars with our friends to have much tuning time.

These are the "new" Good Old Days for my Kids and Grandkids!

Jesus is Lord of the rough and tumble jungle equally as much as the
tranquil places of this world.

Way to go!!!
Congrats !!! I have been deep staging for a few years now especially when I run on a .500 pro tree and on advice of a few sucessful racers they told me that if I am going deep to get in quick . That way the the opponent has less time to play games , I stage all in one motion up on the converter and I roll right in deep no stopping at the pre stage. ( foot braking , no two step ) It has worked pretty well for me so far. Most of the tracks I race at honor deep staging .. one doesn't and it makes it hard to run there again I have done ok there , I did get burned last year ( I didn't get in deep fast enough and was quick treed ) Deep is not allowed to be on the car there and it has thrown a few of my competitors off .. sometimes to my advantage ! Congrats again cool car !

At our track LVMS...We may deep stage but we are not
allowed to put it on the window. It is up to us to get in quickly
and not roll thru the lights.

At the National races, Stock and Superstock MAY NOT deep stage without DQ.

Before my 5 Eye surgeries, often I would have to take a couple of bumps after
staging to adjust my lights.

It is not the most effective strategy. If you are not shallow or deep but somewhere
in between = you do not have a consistent idea of your roll out time. This plays
havoc with keeping a reliable reaction time and I do not recommend it.

Both cars in the picture were dialed in the 11.50s (11.50 is the limit for sportsman).
Jon's car is full of lead ballast and weight bars as well as retarded timing plus a few other
measures to slow it way down (10 Second car thru the mufflers normally). The weather station
altitude was 3500 so it slugged alone at 114 MPH thru the lights to the C8s 120 MPH+! However,
my boy's car is several tenth faster (even with the weight) than the C8 as you can see in the picture
in the first 60 ft.

Partly because our Goodyears are more efficient that the C8s drag radials. Also because our chassis
is optimized for Drag Racing.

Irving Family Racing has been competing a against Farnum Family Racing for the best part of
the last 30 years since our track opened. We get along pretty well now, but that was certainly
not always the case so many years ago!

In the early 2000s, I left Denver at the Mile High Nationals and forfeited my chance to win
the race after the third round and drove 800 Miles all night home to beat the Farnum Family
for the Track championships. Madness, but I was a stubborn/proud guy 25 years ago. Hopefully,
the Lord has help me with that (somewhat at least).
