Lol, I didn't either on the first one I did and had the same problem. Now we know!!

Always use the old lock ring. My new lock ring caused gas to leak all over the garage floor. New ones are too thin.

I'm replacing my fuel tank in the next few days. Glad I read this!

Went to look for it out where the tank is, no ring, trash guy came today, I emptied the shop trash yesterday. I'm thinking this is not good.

Luckily I must have learned, the old ring is in the trunk of the car along with the old sending unit.

I use RTV under and over the gasket then over the edges of the locking ring. Works great every time

RTV and gas generally do not go together very well. Gas turns RTV into a gooey slim. Beware!

I have used it numerous times without a problem. I guess you should let the RTV cure before exposing it to gas
