pulled the 318 from my duster, long tube headers, put a built 440 in and had to take out due to a couple issues (headers not fitting being one). Just dropped the rebuilt 318 back in with shorty headers, and no matter what the new headers will not clear passenger side nor steering box on driver side. any tips would be greatly appreciated

Well the 318 headers were stainless but cheep. Thinking I could dent them in a place or two and make them work. The 440 were headman shorties but both were supposed to fit a body and don’t. I had long tube headman on the 318 when pulled and really didn’t like the fact they were just too low on the car. So I felt for sure that I could find some shorties for it. East Tennessee back roads were not easy on the long tubes.

There are long tubes that will fit with decent clearence, and there are shorties that will not fit and/or put the head pipe pretty low. Sad but true.

if your gonna try to make the ones you own work, then I'd begin by examining how the flanges fit. Sometimes a few degrees is all that is needed to put the tubes too far outboard. Its a bunch of work to change but this is the sort of checking and analysis you'll have to do to see if they can be made usable.

There's a bunch of threads in the exhaust section about headers and fit (or lack of).
