NHRA Pro Stock: Too little, Too late?

-
There's no development needed, the Chimps running NHRA made a conscious decision to rob the HEMI of it's 1,250rpm superiority entirely, placing the 'maximum' at the point when the heads just start working......now They are 'GRACIOUSLY' allowing them a whopping 40% of the engine's powerband, WOW, thanks a bunch.......F'n jokers.....haven't watched that yawn-inducing crap for 25+ years. Between them & the NAPCAR debacle,...I only have whatever road racing is going on for real quality race entertainment.

Another nuance to the new rpm rule is that it only applies if you are running a Dodge engine in a Dodge car, or a Ford in a Ford. I find that ironic because they have no problem with running the DRCE (Chevy) in any body. Maybe they were worried that Camaros would start showing up with Hemis? Wouldn't that chap their hide?! :D Or that everyone would switch to a Mustang body with a Chevy engine with a blue oval on the valve covers to claim their extra 500 rpm by saying, "look, it's a Ford!"

As mentioned previously, for 2027 teams will be allowed to have hood scoops and can run up to two throttle bodies vertically on top of a tunnel ram type manifold. it will look cooler than the vacuum cleaner attachments they are using now with "flat" hoods (define "flat" - they're nowhere close) but again, it's not going to draw any new talent into the class.

The OP's premise is exactly right: too little, too late. There's no saving the class. It's a shame - it was great for the first few years.

Spot on RacerDave ... 100% correct !

Vacuum cleaner attachment… now that’s funny !!!

Couldn't have said it better. I also saw the hood scoop article last week. The NHRA makes lame attempts at parity, then tries to also call it a cost savings to "new" teams coming in. What a bunch of malarkey...
Which will lead to only one or two approved suppliers of "legal" parts. Since when has having a sole source or designated supplier EVER resulted in a cost savings to ANYBODY?
Buncha hooey. NHRA and NASCAR administrators are sounding like politicians in training.

I think NHRA is delusional if they think racers are going to flock back to Pro Stock with Fords and Dodges just because of a 500 rpm higher rev limiter. To really create parity - because these brands have fallen so far behind due to lack of development - they would have to also take 500 rpm away from the Chevy guys. I'm not even sure if that is enough.

Then they are going to have to let Mustangs and (which Mopar? Challenger? Dart? Charger?) slice-n-dice the bodies like the Camaros to get them equally aerodynamic. Overall I see this ruling producing a grand total of......wait for it.....ZERO new cars in Pro Stock.

There are currently only two Mopars I know of - Alan Prusiensky and Brandon Miller - running the Hemi in a Pro Stock, and Alan hasn't been actively racing NHRA for a couple years now. Brandon's equipment is Alan Johnson stuff from the 20-teens and while it runs respectably, the class is super tight and you can miss qualifying by .01. There is also a guy named Joe Wilczek with a Ford (currently powered by a Hemi from Derek Kramer's Dodge because Joe ain't a Chebbie guy :p)

But all this ignores the issue of funding.... neither Ford nor Mopar are going to sink dollars into Pro Stock development only to get slapped back into last year when they go faster than a KB or Elite car. Bottom line is NHRA has fostered mediocrity by factoring the Mopars and Fords since the 1970s yet never handing down a ruling that negatively impacts the Chevrolets. So it's only through attrition that the Chevy engine rose to the top of the heap, and it's why we have the mess we have today.

Two spot on assessments.

A few of my favorites were Bob Gliddens Fairmont or WJs Hurst Olds Cutlass.

Yeah , but old Bob ran nitrous in all those engine combinations , his son even admitted it later...jfyi

IF , a Mopar started winning again , "they`d handicap it some way like they`ve always done !!!"

Always gave in to the Chevys. Seems like every class did.

Regulations for the sake of "parity" is the original woke joke.
Outline a set of basic class rules that apply equally across the board to all makes and let 'em run. Let the cream of the crop rise to the top on their own.
Hell, if a freakin' Studebaker spinning 12 grand turns out to be the hot setup, then so be it.
Let the Chevy boys cry.

YES!! This RPM limit is an absolute joke!! If your engine makes power at 12,000 RPM then let it fly!! Let those Hemi's breath!! Pro stock isn't bracket racing, build the best engine program ya can and run what ya brung!!

im addicted to championship drag racing,,,when they rail roaded the hemi out of competition, it ticked me off, im convinced the KB/SUMMIT team when jason line was doing the engine work and bowing down to greg anderson, there was a program once on speed vision, long before fox sports , in there shop was a mopar super stocker,,,,,not long after that NHRA changed the RPM limits down from 11000 rpm to 10,500 which benfitied the wedge head chevys, im highly convinved KB team made a deal with NHRA FOR THE RPM CHANGE,now nhra has IHRA breathing down there necks,,,as much a s ide love to see a mopar prostocker, kicking butt, deep down inside i hope no mopars how up,let nhra rot,,to help prove my point in 2025 at the hemi challenge in INDY, jason line,of KB/SUMMIT fame was campaining a 68 super stock hemi barracuda,he won the event and the second place car he also built and tuner,,,,jason line is a carberator guru, he was found with an illeagle carb as was the second place hemi super stocker,, both were disqulified recieved no pay out, they split the prize money with the rest of that hemi super stocker class,,next race hemie challenge jason line was a no show,,,

Jason Line didn't build the Jimmy Daniels Dart nor does he tune it and the Daniels Dart was not disqualified for a carb infraction , he was disqualified for a cylinder head infraction. The Hess cars have however not been seen at the last two Hemi Challenges , the Dutch Classic and Belle Rose , it will be interesting to see if they show up for the Columbus IHRA Hemi Challenge . BTW the Daniels / Barton team will now be a two car team with Jim Daniels Sr driving the Gary Wolkwitz Dart and Jim Jr his Dart I just heard this on Bobby Fazios interview with Steve Comella the other evening

Mopars had trucks Mopar powered. But besides that that class was cool. Small blocks that had to be shifted. Fun class.
The Dakotas were "barn-doors", compared to the chevy and ford mini-trucks. Started out, behind the 8-ball.
