741 with all new parts, just assembled, buy not by me.It whines on the over run especially around 2000rpm. doesnt seem so bad at cruise or high speed.
i'm assuming its been assembled wrong, but I have read here in the past that some ring and pinions are noisey. This one is a 3.55 motive gear set.

anyone? Checked via Search but nothing conclusive. Just wondering if diff whine is normal when running in a new assembly?

Sounds like the backlash is not set quite right, or that the tooth contact pattern is off. Both are easy to check while the axle in the car UNLESS its an 8.75" axle. Since that is what you've got, you can take the center section out and check it without disassembling it. You'll need a dial indicator micrometer with a magnetic base. Set it up so the axis of the shaft is tangent to the gear rotation with the tip against one tooth on the ring gear. Gently rock the ring back and forth. You'll feel a small amount of free play where the ring moves without moving the pinion. That small amount is the backlash. Measure that and see if its in spec. (check for that, I don't have it handy right now.) If it is, take the micrometer off, and apply a small amount of white grease, OR , clean the ring gear and apply blue dye or permanent marker. run the ring gear a full rotation. Look for the bare metal on the teeth, it should be a nice contact patch centered on the tooth, not only side to side, but base to tip of tooth. If not, that is your problem.

thanks Max. thats a clear guide. Looks like I need to pull out the sucker again. Getting these set up right really seems to be trial and error!

I used a set of Motive Gears a couple yrs. back and no matter what I did I couldn't get the pattern right on. I even took it to a buddy that has been doing them for yrs. and he had no better luck than me. I put it in and it howled some so I took it out and tried again. Got it looking better on the drive side pattern and sold it to a buddy cheap telling him of the history. He put it in his and said it still has a little noise but it's not terrible. I recently set up a set of Richmond gears and the setup went as smooth as silk and they make no noise at all. After that experience I won't use Motive gears again.

I also had noisey 4.57,s tried and tried to no avail, sold them to a member after telling him about setup and howl.He said he,d take his chances. They to were Motive Gears.
