I've got a 66 cuda and just put a working set of OEM gauges in it but when grounded the fuel gauge goes straight to full. I figured it was a problem with the capacitor on the back of the dash but figured i would seek some more knowledgeable advice. Has anyone else had this issue and/or know of a resolution?

The noise suppression capacitor on the panel is not the problem.
When the sender wire is shorted / zero resistance to ground, the gauge should go to full. This condition can kill a gauge in 3 minutes or less. Should be done only for brief tests.
Best advise I can offer is search here and read some of the kazillion posts on the topic so you have a understanding of how its designed and works before diagnosing.

Im seeing some pretty general gauge diagnosis threads but all of my gauges are working just not the fuel gauge. I've traced the sender wire and it is showing resistance. Can you point me toward a more particular thread on the issue?

OK that's a little more clear. Sounds like you need a in tank sender. If your sender is working it will show somewhere between 10 and 80 ohms depending on how much fuel there is. Then the sender itself needs to be chassis grounded. Have you looked for a ground jumper from sender metal tube to cars metal tube ?

How often do those go bad? I installed a new one about 10 years ago but then I garaged it 1 year later and just pulled the car out recently.

Are you talking about this? If so, get under there and work it back and forth in a rotational way around the fuel line, it may have just corroded and lost it's ground.

I cant answer that one. I imagine just a little fuel could destroy the thing over a 10 year period.

Doh, I see he said sender. Somehow my mind got stuck on the ground issue. Still worth checking out.

If it's the sender you can find out easy enough by unplugging the wire off it at the tank.
Guage should drop to empty.
