I just received a FilterMag oil filter cutter from Summit, today. It was about 50 bucks. It is very simple to use, and does a very efficient job of cutting the filters. There is no debris from the cutting procedure introduced into the filter which would skew your observations. The downside is that it can be a little messy, because you can never drain all the oil out of the filter before you cut it open, and the cut edges are as sharp as a razor. So extra care is advised. It can be an eye opening or a validating experience to visually see up close how the filters are constructed. I first opened up the (Fleetguard)filter on a parts (cop)intrepid I bought, pretty sure the bearings are gone in that one. Not very impressed with the guts of that one. Also cut up a wix 51515, very well made, which reassured me, because I've been using them almost exclusively on my Mopes for many years.

Punch a small hole into the Filter can and it will drain more out. I usually do this and drain it over nite and cut the next day.

Punch a whole, "tin snips" aircraft style

On a side note, all the short words go together, left, port, and red

All the long words go together, right, starboard, and green

Red handle snips cut a left hand circle
Green handle snips cut a right hand circle
