hey.
Im having some problems with the oil in my 170 1963 slant six. the oil keeps leaking out of my oil filter canister no matter how good of a seal i make. i thought it was the pressure releaf valve that was stuck slosed, and sure enough it's stuck. so my question is, how do i get it unstuck?

Service the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2.

Which kind of oil filter does your car have? Is it the kind where you replace the entire filter unit each time, or is it the kind where you open it, remove the old filter element, install a new filter element, and put the filter back together again? Exactly where is the leak?

it,s the canister type one, with the center nut. it leaks in the top seal, closest to the passenger side fender

OK, that probably means you need new gaskets for your canister lid and top nut. Usually (at least in the USA) the gaskets come with the replacement oil filter element. You need to make sure the canister and lid aren't bent, rusted, damaged, or have bits of old gasket stuck to them.

You may want to remove the canister completely, install an oil filter adaptor or standpipe, and start using self-contained spin-on oil filters.

Do you have a link for a kit that can do that?.and can i make the conversion without taking the oilpump out?

You don't need a kit, just a part. Put an ad on here and/or on slantsix.org for an oil filter adaptor nipple (with or without standpipe) that screws into the oil pump where the filter mounts. Almost every Slant-6 engine or oil pump built has one of these (except the few made with canister-style oil filter). You'll surely find one inexpensively. It needs a small oil-resistant rubber O-ring squeezed between the hex flange and the oil pump body. Once you get it, remove the entire canister style filter, it unscrews from the oil pump. Screw the adaptor nipple into the pump in the same place, make it completely tight. Now you can use a spin-on filter. Don't know what brands of filters you have in Denmark, but over here the filters to look for would be such as a Wix 51515 (or 1806 which has a built-in standpipe), a Motorcraft FL-1A, a Purolator L30001, or the ultra-premium Fleetguard LF3487 (I used to buy these by the case and still have some left; you or anyone else want to buy them...er...for that matter, I think I might have the filter adaptor nipple, too. Watch your inbox.

Ok thank's!. But still cant get the pressure releaf valve out, couldn't a stuck pressure releaf valve cause too high oil pressure in the canister?

It's on the underside of the oil pump. Not a real fun job. I shined mine up all nice with mothers Polish .

I don't know what it is about Wix filters. But the last two I bought wouldn't hold oil after the engine was off.
