C/FX ....... Top Competitor

Car............. 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 {289}
Driver......... Bill Hoefer
Location .... California

Bill Hoefer had smoked a 13.48 @ 104.05 MPH at Carlsbad Raceway in January 1965 in
the season opener. {Non-Record Meet}

2-weeks later, Bill had won C/FX Class at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona by
running a string of 13.40's.

Bill then got a 'new' Earl Wade 289 Engine, and in mid-February 1965 blasted down a
13.25 @ 107.03 MPH at Carlsbad Raceway.

Bill had also won the C/FX Class at the 1965 NHRA Springnationals at Bristol, Tennessee.

And then followed up by winning Junior Stock Eliminator at the NHRA Springnationals
when he upset the Plymouth-backed 1965 273 Barracuda {F/SA} of 'favored'
Doug Patterson in the Junior Stock Championship Finals.

On August 20, 1965 in the high desert of Palmdale, California >
Bill Hoefer captured the C/FX National Record by posting a 13.32 @ 107.30 MPH

A much anticipated C/FX showdown was expected for the 1965 NHRA Indy Nationals
on Labor Day Weekend between the 1965 Galaxie 500 and Dave Koffel's 1965 Plymouth Belvedere.

At the time, Bill Hoefer was running with '4' Weber 48 'downdraft' Carburetors set up on his 289 Ford powerplant
to go along with the famous 'Ford Teardrop Hood'

The 'C/FX' Showdown That Never Happened

1965 NHRA Nationals @ Indianapolis

Oddly, the Ford Racing Division kept Bill Hoefer and his 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 {Record Holder}
away from the Nationals.

Plymouth Racing had Dave Koffel and his 1965 Belvedere with the 273 {primed and ready} with
a 'new' Racer Brown Roller Camshaft.

Dave had replaced the 'Mechanical' Racer Brown Camshaft {.480" Lift ~ 284* Duration} with a 'special grind'
Racer Brown Roller Camshaft {.492" Lift ~ 292* Duration}

At the Nationals on Labor Day Weekend, Dave Koffel ran his Belvedere 'unopposed' in C/FX Class
and won with an 'easy ride' of 13.93 @ 100.89 MPH.

In Junior Stock Eliminator on Sunday, Dave went 5-Rounds and made it to the Semi-Finals, before he
unfortunately 'broke out' while winning.

Below the engine, John Dallafior smokes off the line. John's 273 is the F/S Nat'l. Champ.

Herb,

Close Up View

This 1965 Belvedere was an 'original' A-990 Race Hemi for SS/A.

* The A-990 came equipped with Lightweight {.018" Thin-Steel}
Front Fenders, Hood, Radiator Support and Lightweight Front Bumper Brackets.

* The A-990 cars were delivered without rear seats. To comply with C/FX rules, a rear
seat cushion unit and back rest panel cushion were required.

* The 8 3/4" rear was equipped with 4.56 Gears for the 4-Speed Race Hemi. Dave later
swapped in 4.86 Gears for the high-winding 273.

* The '3' Stewart-Warner Electric Fuel Pumps were 'initially' installed for the gas-guzzling
twin-carbed Holley 770 CFM - 426 Race Hemi.

* Added Roll-Bar

* 7" Slicks

* Full-length complete stock Exhaust System with single {horizonatal} muffler behind the
gas tank {A-990 style}.

* By October 1965, Dave was running with a 'specially designed' roller camshaft by Harvey Crane.
It was a 'one of profile' by Crane Camshaft.

As for the Koffel "273 Hemi" package car, Dave found out where it went several years ago. "We retired the car in late 1965, and the reason I know that is because we put the Edelbrock intake back on it, and I sold the car locally as a turnkey race car to a man for his son. Well, the son ended up being drafted into the Army soon afterward and never came back. The man had the car for some time, and he sold it. I tried to track it down for a while and found out it had been restored as a stock A990, but I think it would have been worth more as the only 1965 C/FX car than one of 100 Hemis!"

Excellent Find........

At the 1965 Indy Nationals, Dave Koffel won the C/FX Class, as he was the only oneentered in Class.

In Stock Eliminator, he had to run off the C/FX National Record, which was 13.32.

During Eliminations, you were permitted to run no quicker than {-.010} undermaking the Index 13.22.

In the Semi-Finals, Dave won, but ran under with a 13.21 ..... OUCH!!!

Sylvia Hoefer ran the last meet for the season. She had run several previous runs so that Bill could re-set his record throughout the season (car craft)

But at Half Moon track without the throttle stop or governor set Susie ran a:

13.17 @ 107.78

In Bill's car

http://www.dragracecentral.com/drcstory.asp?ID=128161

The year after the championship, 1965, Bill Hoefer and his brother had to do a lot of traveling in an effort to defend their title, but that didn't mean that the family wouldn't still be highly competitive back in their home state of California. Bill's wife, Willie's mom, Sylvia, was busy carving out a nitch of her own at their favorite drag strip, the famous Half Moon Bay track. At the final race of the 1965 season, Sylvia not only won the C/FX class but she also set both ends of the national record at 13.17 and 107.78 mph. Again to quote National Dragster from the October 8, 1965 edition."It was Bill's Galaxie all right, but Bill wasn't at the helm. Sylvia, Bill's wife, was mashing the throttle since another meet would put Bill in the Traveler's Division. The car has a throttle stop, or governor, and Bill removed it figuring that Sylvia didn't have a chance to set the record. But what started out as fun turned out to be serious as Sylvia got both ends of the record. Not bad for her first time in the car." Fast forward from 1965 to 2006, and to further add to the family's history, Willie's brother, C.W., advanced to the semi-finals in Super Street at the Phoenix national event this past year.

You may have to copy and paste the link but it shows the ( unique?) set- up of the four webers on Koffel's car:I = I on the homemade manifold for Indy by Joe Tribus. I can't think of how the linkage worked (cable /bell cranks?) with the two webers (front and back) turned sideways to the two middle carbs?http://www.carcraft.com/dragtimes/1420_battle_of_the_heavyweights_cfx_racing/photo_10.html

They never ran with the Weber set-up in NHRA Competition.

They did run several tests at Detroit Dragway in October/November 1965.

Thanks Paul
I think that was a unique Weber set up?

I think Sylvia Hoefer was familiar with the C/FX car before Half Moon and the 3.17 per CarCraft. It would be a double clutch to simulate a missed shift in between Bill's records. I am thinking she hit all gears at Half Moon.

Ted Spehar built/ prepped Bill Hoefer''s car for the 1966 season? ( per CarCraft)

From. CarCraft

"What I remember was that in 1964, my dad had gotten points in Modified Production for resetting his own record over and over," said Willie Hoefer, "and I think that next year you could not reset your own record; somebody else had to do it, so my dad put my mom in the car and told her to double clutch it to not hammer the record. They said she missed a gear, but really it was how she was told to drive it. She was actually pretty good with that stick."

Also see Spring Nationals 1966 (Lower left):
I think the car was eventually stolen and Bill retired to farming.

C L Roads,

Do you any information on the 1965 NHRA World Finals.

Apparently Dave Koffel did not head south and participate with his C/FX car.
But Bill Hoefer did go with the 1965 Galaxie 500, and got to the Final 16 of
Stock Eliminator before getting knocked off.
