open ended center caps purpose?

What was the purpose of the open ended center caps on some of the ol' Trans Am cars?

I would bet on two things:

Those showy caps weren't on there after the first tire change,

and thinking was probably to get rid of every last bit of heat possible.

Maybe a tech thing for them to inspect the spindle nut.

We really should use a Mopar when asking a question like this.

I think it is more of a hub extension that allows quicker wheel positioning and tire changes.

I think I found the answer,,,,,,,I think FormulaS340 is right. Article says they used the longer hubs coated with teflon to help slam the tires on faster.
