What is recommended to use when painting these parts? I see different items being used, and would like to do this the best way. I have had friends tell me you need to use base coat clear coat. I also see other post where people have used spray can paint from Lowes Home Improvement. I am not being cheap, just need to do it right.

Any normal engine enamel will work just fine provided the parts are clean (sandblasting is a good method). A few coats of good engine enamel is all you need. Brands such as VHT and PlastiKote are readily available at any auto parts store.

For the backing plates any good enamel will work. For the drums a good heat paint available at any parts chain works.

I use spray on semi black Rustoleum after cleaning, brake cleaner degreasing and primer.

Well except for the drums that were painted red at the factory, they were left natural. Which means around here, rust-colored. :)

But I always paint mine (even on my newer cars) so they don't look so bad. I use "Cast Iron Gray" engine paint. I think the brand is Duplicolor that I get from AutoZone or maybe Advance Auto. The axle flange peeking out from behind the backing plate is that cast iron gray.

The backing plates are black and I use epoxy gloss or Rustoleum Professional Gloss Black from Home Depot.
But now that I can powder coat I do them in powder like the one in the photo.

All of the above is after glass beading the parts first.

correct would be bare metal.
..i used RPM.
i'll tell you in a couple of years if it works!

I painted both backing plates and drums. I couldn't get it all to shiny metal so I used Rust Destroyer, which both converts rust and primes bare metal, and claims good to 800 F. Top coated with 500 F black engine spray paint on the backing plates and 900 F caliper paint on the drums. Both A's have wheels that you can see the drums (Cragar and spoke) so I painted same color as the body. Looks nice now, but they may get cruddy over time.

Thanks for the response. I'll be running stock wheels so there will not be much visible from the outside. Just wanted to paint these so I wouldn't have to worry about that later.

I have been using appliance paint lately, stands up to heat great and looks like it was powder coated. I did some hood hinges and they were bound by the paint, Used a propane torch at first and bid not even wrinkle the paint, ended up grinding it off!
