Does anyone know for sure what is needed to get in and out of canada from the US. I may be going for new years but dont have a passport. Some have told me you do, some say you dont. Some people told me you only need an ID and birth certificate. i would be going by land on a bus. what do i need??? thanks

im almost positive you DO need it. I would play it safe and get it just incase.

I was just in Toronto for work in October -- You need a PASSPORT. I actually asked when i came back since they are still in the process of changing the signs as you drive up to the US border. NO PASSPORT - No reentry.

You don't NEED a passport. You need proof of citizenship that's been designated by the WHTI.

This includes:

Passport
Enhanced Driver's License
Permanent Resident Card
NEXUS Card
Fast Card

Birth Certificate won't be enough.

A Nexus Card is great for travel between Canada and USA as you can use the Nexus lane and don't have to wait in the lines, I have one it work great and it's $50.00 and good for 5 years you can apply & pay for it online then you go for an interview if they like you, It will come in the mail, The whole procass takes about a mounth thou, Better and cheaper than a passport !

Good luck

IHRA has told U.S. racers that they must have a passport to get in & out. However, you can get a credit card-like I.D. passport for less than the regular booklet-type passport if you only travel in & out of Canada or Mexico. Not sure if that applies only to vehicle travel or airline travel also.

I have an enhanced dl, good for ground entry only I believe.....

You don't need a passport to get into canada but you do need it to get back home to the US either a "Passport or other approved document " is how it is worded the approved documents being the Nexus card or here in bc we have a new license with a chip that is also approved but requires an interview at ICBC and a seperate fee with your regular license ,Canada lets everyone in which is of course the secret to our homeland security -we're the place the bad guys send their families to be safe while the fighting is going on at home so they won't dare try anything here for fear of hurting their own - lol

READ THIS:

NOTICE that ONLY a U.S. passport allows travel by OTHER than land or sea. This means that if you FLY in/ out of Canada, you need a U.S. Passport

Ahhh nope

Bottom line: Since June 2009, everyone from every country arriving in Canada by air, land and sea has needed a passport or equivalent travel document. (Some exceptions apply to children's passport requirements). Besides an up-to-date passport, visitors may instead have an equivalent travel document, such as a NEXUS Card.

  1. NEXUS Card: A partnership between the Canada and U.S. border services that pre-approves entry for travellers by land, sea or air between Canada and U.S. An added benefit is designated and faster lanes at border crossings and airports. Application process involves interview and fingerprinting. Both U.S. and Canadian citizens apply through U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
  2. U.S. Passport Card: This U.S. Department of State-issued ID is valid for entry into Canada by land or sea, though not valid for international air travel.
  3. Enhanced Driver's License (EDL): EDLs indicate both citizenship and identity. Valid for entry into Canada by land or sea, though not valid for international air travel. As of January 2009, only available in Washington and New York states, but coming to Vermont. See individual state licensing departments for more info.
  4. FAST/Expres card: This U.S. Customs and Border Protection program pre-approves commercial truck drivers for travel between the U.S. and Canada.

I stand corrected , I was told when I got my Enhanced License in August 2009 it was only for entering the US and not required for re-entry to Canada but it would not surprise me in the if Canada requires it , However as a former manager of a building used as an overflow refugee holding center I can assure that a great number of people enter this country every day with no documents what so ever , they call themselves refugees and we treat them as such irregardless of their actual status ie the family that drove up from south america in a 3yr old car loaded with bikes ,ghetto blasters and crap clearly bought in the US ,who them enjoyed a 2 week stay with food allowance while they awaited approval of their entry petition which was granted

AHH true. We DONT help any terrorists. We shoot them.Just ask our boys in Afghanistan.

One may think this is a pain in the *** but one of the reasons why this was done is so the RFID chip can be inserted into your passport as well as your drivers license. Yes the costs have gone up for your passport and your drivers license but someone's gotta pay. My new passport cost triple the price of my older one.

Everything has been done according to the plan, first Homeland Security and the Patriot Act in 01 02, then the RFID Act in 05 to be in full force by May 08. This was put together for our protection, not only in the U.S. but also our allies like Canada, Australia, England, etc..

Don't you just feel invincible now, I know I do :)

X2. Nexus is the way to go if you cross constantly. They do fingerprint you and you must make is through homeland security but it is the only way to go. BEAT THE LINEUPS>

Still have to have Passport first prior to Nexus

YOu need a valid Passport before you can apply for a Nexus card

i would like to get one but i dont know if i would get it by new years

You can apply in person for a passport at your local Federal Building and get it in a couple of weeks or less. You will need to show evidence (bus ticket) that you are traveling in a time frame that won't allow you to wait the normal process time frame.

As I recall there was an expediting fee on top of the normal fee, something like $20 or $30 when my wife did it but if you need it you need it.

So my original 1968 draft card and TWIC badge and JaxPort Badge and Ga. Port Pass and my Fl CCW license ain't gonna be enuff??
