i want to build a 500 HP totally streetable engine. It will be a 318. J heads. Pump gas friendly. Must run power windows, power brakes, power steering. Also, I don't want a stall converter. Must have no more than a 3.23 gear. The car is 3800 pounds. No headers.

Show me the way.

Someone's bored, popcorn and soda for watching this novel develop. :-)

Custom roller with about 285 at .050 with 700+ lift. If not for the 3.23s I would have got radical. Stamped rockers should work fine.

I can show you a 318 with 500 hp, complete street (cruises just fine all day), pump gas, all power accessories, no converter, no headers, not sure of the weight of the car, or gearing.

I would run an LA version of the old Max Wedge Lunati Cheater Cam, great street manners, excellent in stop and go traffic, easy on the heads and valves as I recall in a 440 I once had, should get good mileage and longevity too! Yup.

I heard most people's cam choices end up robbing horsepower, so don't put one in it at all.
Use one of those race car sound audio devices.

I knew you were up to something when I first saw your post. :D

You have to use chevy owners math, +20hp for intake, +20 for carb, +20hp for headers, + 20hp for roller rockers, +100 for camel humps,+ 100 for cam, etc, till you get the #. I mean just askem', they're all runnin' around with 600hp 327's

All I ever ran across was 400 horse 350 vette engines...... Every one of them. Stock 350 4bbl in a Camaro, just add headers = 400 horse, came from the factory with a vette motor. :D
I could beat them with a 318 2bbl and 2.76 gears, but they all had 400 horse vette engines... LOL

...you guys worry too much about cams.
Purple oil, purple air cleaner, purple brake fluid and an H pipe and your good to go!
