The owner of the shop I work at told me I cold have one of the old air compressors they had in the loft. The plant manager and I pulled one down and tossed it on my trailer on lunch today!

It does have a 5hp 3 phase motor on it so, I am planning on swapping it for a 220v single phase and see what it will do!

I am very excited to get it home tonight!

Now how are you going to sleep at night with all of that guilt. :D

Better just bring it to me.

I think you are going to need a serious bad *** motor to spin that bad boy. Nice score.

Maybe easier to set-up a rotary phase convertor . How many HP is the 3ph on it now ?

I got an 80 gallon compressor from an abandoned trailer house a friend of mine was renting out. I got it for 50 bucks. She originally thought it was a hot water heater. I had to replace about 60 dollars worth of parts. So $110.00 all in for an 80 gal tank not as good as free but still not bad.

Changing motors might sound easy, but a 5 HP will not be cheap.

As stated check into a roto phase if there isn't anything wrong with the one there.

Boss must have been in a good mood this morning, great compressor, and older IR

It has a 3 phase 5hp motor on it right now. I havr no idea the condition of the motor or the compressor :-/

I had thought about using a phase converter but, I was under the impression that a "compressor duty" phase converter was very very expensive?

My plan is to compare the cost of a good rotary phase converter to the cost of a new 220v single phase motor.

The owner of the shop said that I was more than welcome to order anything I needed through the shop so, I MAY have access to some good prices for the parts?

Congrats! Air is good. Compressed air awesome!

I bought a IR T-30 out of Dodge dealership that was destroyed by tornado and it had 5 hp 3 phase. I bought a new 5 hp single phase for around $400. When I started it up I watched to see when it would shut off. It went past 135 psi, 150 psi,175 psi then I started getting nervous. I moved back and kept watching as pressure kept building. When it started toward 200 psi i was running to the breaker and it turned off at 195 psi. It was still climbing without even straining. I backed pressure off to 150 psi. The shop foreman told me it was running the whole shop at dealership.

That looks like a 452 Compressor pump. If you put a 220 motor on it, it will need to be 7HP at the VERY least. More like 10. But if you stick with 3PH, that motor will do fine. Nice score.

why don't you look into a thing called a PHASE GENARATOR then no need to change the motor

I assumed this would be a thread about someone "borrowing" tools from work like my father did back in the 80s and 90s when he worked for Hysters lol. Slightly disappointing! Nice score though :) And legal at that.

Just put a 5.2 Magnum on it!
