So far I have used the power steering from the original motor on the 440 that's the one that's painted black

the one that's in a car is different.. are they interchangeable? what do I need to do to get this to work or can I just use the one from the 440 the black one already installed on the motor

They are interchangeable as long as you have the correct high pressure line. I'm betting the line on the pump that's on the motor will plug right in. Check it first

The 2nd one looks like a /6 pump. The pullies are different on a slant. I'm not sure between SB and BB. The bracketry is different between those 2 pumps and each style pump uses it's own bracketry. If everything lines up with what you have just use it.

, but are they interchangeable can I use the one that's mounted on the motor if I can get the hoses to work?

Yes. What did the engine come from? That is a 73-up pump so I would get a 73 A body hose for a v8 and see how well it fits.

1970 Dodge Dart slant 6 to a 1978 440.... the hoses don't match... now I'm not sure what to do... different fittings

Because the pumps use different syle hoses and fittings too. See if you can get that 73-up A body hose or for an F body up to 79 with a v8. I would try 78 Aspen/Volare v8 for the hose.

Definitely try a line from say a 74 dart with a 318/360. I'm using a 77 big block saginaw pump like you have on the motor with a power steering box from a small block car.

Can I ask another stupid question. What if I didn't even use any power steering at all and just left it the way it was with no hoses

You could do it but I personally would either find the right line or switch to a manual steering box. A power steering box without fluid sucks to drive

Is it any worse than manual steering

Yes, no road feel , hard to turn and worse if you aren't moving, sloppy steering , tons of play in the wheel. I have done it though lol

Well luckily today must be my lucky day after asking a couple of friends I found this hydraulic hose making store right around the corner from my house

...Or you could order the later hose, as suggested, from a place like Rock Auto for $12-15.
