OK, after doing research I have found out you just seat the priming tool in the slot for it and run an electric drill clockwise to prime. Should I be seeing any oil coming out of the valve train? I didn't expect to see it gush out or anything, but I am not seeing any oil up top. I don't have my oil pressure gauge hooked up yet (probably this weekend), but I expect to see pressure when I run the drill...correct? Also, is there a certain speed I need to run the drill?

The priming tool is hex shape long shaft that goes inside the oil pump. Spin the shaft clockwise for small block and counter clock wise for a big block. You may have to rotate the motor while priming to see oil on the top. You should see oil pressure and I use a Dewalt 24 volt drill at high speed. When you start producing some pressure the drill will bogg down a little.

The top end is oiled as the the engine rotates and the oil holes line up What engine are you working on?? We don't have telepathy, and SB/ vs B/RB are completely different oil distro systems

Below is B/ RB engines. NOTE drawing at top left of camshaft. The cam has to rotate so that first one, then the other bank lines up with the oil hole, to run oil up through the cam, up through the block and head, to the rocker shafts

Below, the same thing for a SB is depicted in the drawing at lower right

no telepathy? Damn! :glasses7:

It's a 318. I am going to try rotating the assembly tomorrow and see if that gives me some oil in the valve train. After reading that I remembered seeing something about rotating and priming by quarter turns sometime ago. I am guessing it will solve my problem and I will be able to start her up for the break in!:blob:

I got me one of those remote starter triggers that I hook up to the starter relay. I just crank the motor and drill at the same time. Make sure you have the iginition and fuel disconnected.

I have a 16 year old son that works as good as a remote starter....and when we finished with the priming he crawled under the car and put the drive shaft on.

Needless to say, it worked, thanks guys! At first I could only get the drivers side to flow. I guess I just kept missing the spot for the passenger side. I just had the boy turn the motor over 5 to 10 secs at a time and had oil flowing on both side very quickly.

and btw, thanks for those pictures Dart.....great way to learn for me, and to teach the boy at the same time...beats trying to explain everything

You're welcome, but nothing special, right out of the service manual. Download link posted above
