YET ANOTHER annoying story from the old days.
At some point after buying the 440-6RR, a workmate and I were heading for the radar shop. At that time part of the road was in scrub land, out W of the hangers area, and not much around. The base speed limit was pretty much 25 everywhere, and a speeding ticket on a federal/ military base is not a joke
Any how I was trying out this curve a bit too fast, and got over into the marbles, and spun it 180 and coasted up on the other bank which would not have been a problem except for this ROCK. It put a marvelous gash in the fuel tank (I've forgotten this was about 1972!!!) Maybe an inch--inch and a half long. We got out, said the usual "Oh sh*ts!!", and drove on to the shop. We had a huge old floor jack there, and so I managed to get it up high enough that fuel was not draining. The gash was actually up on the side of the tank towards the rear.
ANYHOW, RTV was fairly new then. We had a genuine tube of U.S. Navy federal supply system G.E. white RTV silicone, so we doped it up with that. I figured it might hold until I could figure out something else.
THAT PATCH WAS STILL ON THAT TANK, NOT LEAKING when I sold the care somewhere around 1978!!!
