Project Hole In The Head - 1970 Duster 340 Resto-Mod

-
Man, you've had a tough go... Especially sorry to hear about your granddaughter, your dogs as well, but especially your granddaughter...

Sometimes a new project gives you something positive to focus on & it sounds like that's something you could use about now..
Thank 1WildRT Yes, I feel like i need something to focus on other than the crap from the past few months - now if only it weren't 95 degrees in my shop...

Good to see you back posting again, Gary.
Sorry to hear about your bad fortunes, but you will get through it.
I can't wait for the progress on this build!

Finished welding the trunk pan in this morning and treated the rest of the area with Ospho to stop any further cancer. Going to try and come in tomorrow to do some filling and seam sealing. Maybe even shoot some primer if I feel really ambitious. Gotta let the Ospho do its work otherwise I would keep going today since it's only 91 in the shop this afternoon.

Good deal! BUT, if you were a drunk, you would buy 2 fifths every day, even on Sun!!!!!:thumbsup:

Another old story. Back in Mo. in the 90s, about a hour from the house, I would go down this blacktop about once a month. I could see this 70 Challenger wayyy off the road, but I had good eyesight back then. Never anyone home, so I never go out to look, except this day I did and it was raining, hard! Complete but a roller, pistol grip shifter. I look at the vin and it says 318 car. But it has a dana under it??? Boxed frame? HUmmmmmm??? I leave a note (why) and phone number. The young guy calls and we talk. He has known this car since his bud had it in HS< YES always a 318 car he knows for a fact! (did anyone change out the dash!????) I buy it for little to nothing, and haul it to my shop and there it sat. Then next year I bought a buds good 68 440 GTX. with a 6 pac motor, 4 speed. I pull its engine and trans and drop it in the Chally. Yes numbers matching eng/trans to the Chally.!!! Next year I traded the Chally for a 66 hemi Coronet roller. Next thing I know I see this Chally for sale in MCG for big $ and states real 6 pac car, says with documentation correct vin and fender tags too! :BangHead:
sidenote: Yes that Challenger was in fact a real V code 6 pac car, with original engine, and the buyer had an illegal dash vin tag made for it no doubt!

Filled a few spots, smoothed it out a little, applied seam sealer, and primered the trunk. Also primered the engine compartment which was previously stripped to bare metal and let sit exposed. I hit it with Ospho over the weekend, gave it a quick scuff and shot with direct to metal primer to seal it up.

Cleaned off all of the grime. Did a little bit of body work on cowl area and door jamb. Shot it with a fresh coat of primer. Going to spend some time over the next week or so blocking it to get it even straighter than it already is. Also need to align the doors a little bit more.

Details make all the difference.... A lap or two of extra blocking doesn't take much time & in the big picture it doesn't waste a lot of material... But you never have to look at it & say

"I shoulda blocked it one more time...."

How many A bodies are missing those crisp body lines especially the lower body line, just kinda sanded & filled till it's round instead of a sharp defined line..

Mr Gary you was supposed to get a good deal on that car as much as Bad you've been thru and you needed the sun shine on you...My condolences and keep moving don't let up to let your mind drift....Good job with amazing find...you will be back on top we are pulling for you....Be there for your son or daughter...some can't handle this...maybe I couldnt....best wishes to you Guy....

Going to talk to a guy I know today about a modern hemi & trans combo. He's a local specialist at Hellcat swaps and always has some low mileage 6.4's and 5.7's laying around. If I can strike a deal, that will probably be the route I take on this one since it is such a blank slate. If not, I still have a 340 waiting in the wings :)

So after talking with the guy I know, I am leaning even more towards a gen iii hemi. He likes the Holley swap kit since it is pretty inclusive and the parts all work well together. Any of you guys got opinions on that or something else I should look at?

Managed to do about 2-1/2 hours worth of blocking today. Drank 96 ounces of water - one ounce for each degree Fahrenheit in the shop LOL. It was just a wee bit warm. Time for some air conditioning
