Rear-end buy price?

I went and did some bone yard scavenging this morning and found an 8 3/4 out of a 71 duster. It has a 742 case is this a good case? It has posi so I am guessing sure-grip and gears are unknown. The only bad thing is the guy wants $1000 for it and it has the small bolt pattern axels. Is this a good price? How much more would it cost me to get big bolt pattern axels and to put 3.73 gears in it? If getting this rear end setup and ready to go under my car is going to cost up around 2 grand it just might be worth it to buy a new rear end like brett did. Also right now my car has the 7 1/4 rear and 904 tranny. How much do you think it would cost for the modifications it would take to get this rear under my car?
 
Thats alot of cash, A body 8-3/4s may be harder to find then B and E rears but not that hard.
 
Yea I think the guy is smokin crack. I called a few of my mopar friends and they said thats way to much to pay. I find it hard to believe this junk yard didn't have any 8 1/4's.

I looked at that add isn't 741 the shitty case thats hard to find stuff for? According to his profile he is in the thumb part of Michigan so does that mean far east side? If so thats like a 8-9 hour drive for me one way. I live an hour north of chicago's northern subburbs.
 
ive noticed that not all v-8 a bodies 73-76 with big bolt pattern and v8 had 8.25 rears most were still 7.5 rears with a big bolt pattern axle.i know the 73-76 340/360 cars had them but most 318 cars still used the 7.5. i had a 74 valiant brougham with a 318, and it had the 8.25. but my 73 dart sport 318 had the 7.5. the 8.25 a body rears are easier to find than the 8.75 but not super plentyful. late model jeep cherokees use the 8.25 rears (though some are dana 35) i have to check my cherokee, but i think the length of the rear is close to the same as a a body, and it has 4.5 in bolt pattern.,just would have to change the spring perches (cherokees are spring over axle)
 
That is so true, I have noticed the same thing. It would seem that all 318 auto trannies had 7.25's. 340's were not available in those years and 360's were only in low percentage of the cars in those production years.
 
Actually 73 might have had some 340's but they are pretty low percentage of the cars made that year.
 
I passed up an A body 8-3/4 with big bolt axles at the swap meet last weekend. He wanted $500. Don't remember what gears were in it, or if it was suregrip . Think it was a 742. $1000.00 is to high, you did the right thing to go home without it. Ray
 
Hey dude, that small bolt pattern posi would be great for my 72. And the price is perfect if you buy it for me for my birthday :lol:

How about if I take a picture of it and give you the picture for your birthday? Pictures are worth at least a 1000 words.

7.5 eh.. that doesnt sound promising to me.. *checks his valiant* its a 75 valiant custom... does the custom make it special(er), i checked the options avaible for that year, and my car has every one of them (V8, A/C, bumper guards, disc brakes, etc) what are the odds i have a 8.25? i look under the back end, and the different case looks pretty big to me.. but then again, all i see all day is chevy and ford axles with chrome diff. covers and big *** tires at the ends.... so my perception maybe messed up with the smaller tires on my car.. :)
 
just took a quick mesurment of the 8.25 in my cherokee, flange to flange is about 51 inches,i will remove the wheels tomorow and get a from drum to drum measurement ......maybe promising :!:
 
Rabius count your bolts holding on your rear cover. If you have 9 than you have 7.25 if you have 10 than its an 8.25. Measuring it isn't going to tell you much unless you measure from the centerline of the axel shaft to the centerline of rear universal joint. On a 7.25 this measurement is 10.09 and on a 8.25 its 11.69.

I miss read what you were talking about here is the measure ments you would need.

Flange to flange: 51.4
Leafspring centerline: 43.02
axel to uni joint centerline: 11.69
 
i gues the only concern is the drum face to drum face,the 8.25 rears all have the same u joint centerline. as for spring pads you will need to install new ones since the cherokee is a spring over axle set up, but changing thats pretty easy.

Sweet I might have to check this out. I did see a few cherokees in the bone yard.
 
there pretty plentiful. most of the ones built from 1996 on have the 8.25.but some have the dana 35,which is light duty (like the 7.5)there were some made in 87 and 88 with a hevy duty tow package that had dana 44 in them, thats also a pretty stout rear ,and parts and gears are super plentyful...
 
That sounds like a good alternative, My Grand Cherokee has rear discs too. I guess I'll pull a few measurements too. :D
 

I would think with Jeeps so popular in the off-road world there should be lots of mods out there to beef one up pretty good?
 
What about the Dakota's & Durango's? They came with a sure grip option as well as different gearing options.
 
Dakota rear ends are to wide, I allready looked into that option. And they have a weird bolt pattern thats hard to get aftermaket rims for.
