May be able to re ring and install new bearings in the motor you picked up, without a whole lot of expense. Heads are another story

Hey, any of you west coast FABO members have a rebuilt 440 for sale?
The motor I just bought and heard run turned out to be in poor shape.
Not my day today!

Don't know where you are exactly, but one of our Mopar group up here in Prescott area may very well have one.
I know one of our guys (David) has a drivable 68 Barracuda for sale with a fairly wild great condition 440.
I can ask they guys up here if you wish.

This is the Barracuda, and the car he wants to concentrate on. (Also a built 440)

Another guy (Rob) has multiple engines in his garage and one of the other guys just bought a complete 383 from him.

Cool. I am in the Phoenix, AZ area.
As far as the running motor on Craigslist, that is how I found the one I have now. Paid $600 for a running motor and trans (needs a rebuild)
If there is a club member, I would have a tendency to have a little more faith in them as far as motor reliability.
I pulled the heads and the piston chambers don't look bad, might be able to do a basic rebuild. However heads may be the issue.
I am not sure where the water came from and since the internals show signs of corrosion, a rebuild would be a good idea.

Yea that looks pretty bad. They May clean up nice with a ball hone job, as long as the taper isn't too bad. How far below deck are those pistons at TDC? YOU CAN GET A CLOSE IDEA WITH FLAT FEELER GAUGES, measure it with the Piston at the top of its travel.
