refurbished dash vents?

Hey,
Has anyone ever refurbished their old dash vents?

I'm re-doing mine.

I've removed the old broken vent part on mine with a drill press bit and am thinking I'll put in some perforated aluminum plate/vent material of some type in it's place. Paint the main part of the vent body and put it back in.

Anyone done this - got pictures?

Anything shinny up there will reflect in the windshield. At 25.00 or so for a pair, may as well say with originals that direct the air flow correctly.
