I am disassembling a 1967 Barracuda to get ready for body work and paint. I pulled the dash today and now the car will not start. I pulled all the connectors and identifiied their locations. As I do not have an electrical schematic I am assuming that the 12 ga. wires that go to the amp meter are the culprit. What is required to bypass the cluster wiring to get the car running. I am assumming that the amp meter wiring is the missing link. I would like to start the car from the keyed ignition and not a remote starter switch.
I could figure it out but maybe somebody has a quick answer.
By the way the wires are not in very good condition. Melted insulation etc. Not the issue
though. Glad I pulled the dash. I will redo the harness
Thanks

Bolt the large red and black ammeter wires together and tape them off. THEY ARE NOT FUSED. Shorting these will guaranteed result in smokage, meltage, and a large EPA superfund cleanupage

One of the very first thing you should do is visit this thread:

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?p=1970088617

and here

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=31

to download a free factory service manual and other technical information

At MyMopar, there are factory parts catalogs for some years

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=107

and also at that site, are simplified wiring diagrams. These are sometimes incorrect, and sometimes not complete (not all options and not all connectors) but they ARE sometimes easier to follow

One thing that IS a little difficult is the special wiring for things like the Barracuda Ralley dash cluster. I believe one of our members on here has that. the really big difference in your cluster and "non" Ralley clusters is that you have an oil gauge, and that the gauge instrument limiter device is built into the fuel gauge.

As always, my advice is to read this article. It points up some of the problems and pitfalls with these old girls wiring

http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml

http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/brighter-headlights.shtml

The really really big thing in the case of an otherwise stock car and harness is condition of the connectors and switches. Bulkhead connector, the connections and the ammeter, the ignition switch connector and switch, and the headlight connector and switch, and dimmer switch and connector are the "biggies."

and make sure that the ground wire going to the dash frame is mounted

What ground wire ? 68 and later has a little ground jumper on the steering column. It has nothing to do with the dash electrical or starting.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the input. I will be swinging by the shop this afternoon and doing a few things on the car. One by trying the amp guage wire tie in. I checked out the recoomended sites and noted the amp gauge problems inherent to Mopars. Now I see why my wires are pretty much fried. looks like a fire waiting to happened. Glad I pulled dash. I will look into retrofitting the amp gauge wiring to the commendations stated in the article. Still will think things through before reassembly.

The ampmeter wire insulation is fried. I wrapped electrical tape around thewires, fastened the 2 connectors together with a nut and bolt, taped securely and vrooom.

Thanks again.

67 wiring docs....... for future reference..

Nice schematic. I will print it up in color on ledger size paper. No way of getting wires mixed up. Plus all the connectors are proprietary to each other

Thanks

They are layered as well. You can hide circuits you do not want to see or trace.
