I saw a picture somewhere, it was a Hemi engine removed from a Dart with the hood up. I was wondering if I could pull a 360 from my Dart with the hood still on. Has anyone doen this? I remove the hood on all of my engine pulls, but it is getting to be harder. Any advice is accepted thanks

Have you considered dropping it out the bottom? With a lift or engine hoist pulling up the front where the bumper bolts on, it's not difficult.

You can leave the hood on if you drop the K member out from the bottom. You could “probably” get the 360 out with the hood on but it’s really not worth trying with the chance of messing something up.

Another option, would be to support the hood with some rope/straps from the ceiling or something which would make doing it that way easier with a single person. Not sure what's getting more difficult but I'm assuming that's part of it. Heavy equipment riggers do things like that all the time.

You treed me by milliseconds.

in a word, yes. but it depends on a bunch of variables: cherry picker construction, choke point on the chain, lifting off the manifold with a carb plate or off the heads, oil pan, ride height/tires, etc, etc, etc

i'll echo what the others said above, if it's freshly painted the *safest* move by far is to pull the hood. but barring that, lifting off the heads with a short choke on the chain will usually get you there, buy you'll likely need another body to help spot on the radiator cross member and hood for clearance and help guide the motor around. though i've done it with two guide ropes and a load leveler, it's not fun.

If you put a fiberglass hood on (like god intended all mopars to have) they lift off super easy with one person.

The hoods screws have been changed out to studs, and the are getting bad and I do not fell that would take another hood off, plus it is aligned well and it took me a long time to get right.

You could be real careful I would think. The main areas Id think would be scratching the underside of the hood with the cherry picker arm and the rad support with the oil pan etc maybe get an engine tilter to help ?

Your best bet is definitely out the bottom.

If the transmission is staying in the car, the engine will come out with a carb plate and the hood on. Add a couple of well-placed moving blankets.

In 50 years....I've never removed an engine with the hood on a car. It makes my brain hurt to picture that.

Out the bottom would be preferable, but yes it can be done.
Lik JYH said, short chain it and lift from the heads.
And yes, lots of HF moving blankets.
Also, depending on the vehicle, another option is to remove the front 2 hood bolts, loosen the back ones a smidge, and pivot the hood upright (and tie it/bungee it in place). This gives you all the room you could possibly want without removing the hood.
On a side note, Dodge Sweptline pickups had a neat setup- kind of a two-stage hood hinge. You could open it normally to about a 45* position; but then it could also be further opened almost straight up. A bonus from back when they built stuff for ease of maintenance.

If you remove the engine from the bottom, you'll have the weight of the "K" member and the steering and braking systems

Yeah its been many years but I know I've done it with the hood on. I pulled 1 340 out and put a 318 in (dont ask) :)
