Hey guys, i've seen some metal band threads and some recent mention of Hendrix and while i'm a moderate Jimi fan, he doesn't hold a candle to Robin Trower in my opinion. I know it's a acquired taste for some, but if your into wild blusey guitar and have the chance to chill/veg out with a few brews or whatever your choice of relaxation is, you should download and listen to the 1974 "Bridge of Sighs" album all the way thru. You will definetely be hooked. There are many live shots thru the years on youtube, but i prefer to appreciate the raw music. Hopefully a few converts here:thumblef:.

Here's a few.............Trower on guitar, Jim Dewar (2002) on bass/vocals, Reg Isidore (2009) on drums.

Jimi IS Robin Trower's candle.

Trower is better in my oppinion also, but Hendrix started it all. :-)

I used to watch Trower in Georgetown Md at the Bayou club (now gone). i think it was one of the first venues he played in the US back in the day. It was a Very small club maybe 2-300 people and you were right there watching him make him trademark funny faces. Always a great time never missed him when he was in town. You ever able to catch him there Rick?

Very cool that you got to see him John. Your not kidding about the faces, i guess someone with that kind of talent can feel everything he does, and it shows. No, i wasn't able to get over that way. At 16, that seemed like a big trip.....lol. My friend that played guitar and drums in a band back then turned me on to him in 74'/75'. He had seen him and was supposed to hook us up for a future venue but it never materialized. I'm jealous....:D.

My mom HATES Trower because I used to blast it when I was in middle school/Jr high... ELP is high on her hate list too.

rick, my wife say's hats off to you!we listen to robin almost daily, your absolutly right. i have seen him play 5 times the first was when i was about 12 years old at the day on the green. in oakland.(when the raiders were a formidable football team.)i bought an import album that was from the bbc live.there was like 5 people clapping after the songs.wish i still had that.....the bass on theb fool and me is sick damn machine deware was. he also sang for ronnie montrose in gamma

Thanks everyone for posting. I thought maybe i was the only left that still was into it.....lol. I do have a pretty eclectic taste in music. My current listening covers just about everything from old rock & roll, Motown, 60's/70's rock, metal bands, r&b love songs, Smooth jazz, old & new country, etc. My current ipod has everything from the Inkspots, in the 30's to Bluegrass......lol. And yes, Allison Krauss gives me half a chubb..:D. Bottom line is i always rely on Trower to relax me when i've had a tough day.

my wife woulda said shirts off to ya but don;t want to mess with that half a chubb

LOL, glad you get the humor. You got a good woman, willing to have fun. Mine is fun loving also, but doesn't quite get my taste in music....lol.

My first date with my wife was to one of his concerts , here in Tulsa.
30 + year ago.

cool stuff, listen to Trower occasionally, I remember getting the first 8 track tape from Columbia House back in the day, lol.

Hey, I think no one mentioned that it is NOT Trower singing.
RIP, Reggie Dewar.

Also see "Wiskey Train", Procol Harum. A country song till Trower got hold of it, the liner notes said.

I saw Trower at the old Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta around 74,
His peddle broke on him.
Sort of funny and sad at the same time watching him try and make it work.
IN FACT, now that I think about it, I went early to usher at another concert there one time. I got there about 5pm or so.
A non-descript band was on the stage setting up. I didn't pay attention to them till the grand piano started up.
It was the headline act, Procol Harum.

I agree with you about Hendrix,.

I'm not a musician. Just a critic. (Isn't everyone)
But I know what I like. And I like what Trower has written and played better than the dead doper. Too rolling stoned.
Hendrix music seems .......well, uncoordinated and busy.

Hey, I looked it up and see what I found.

I think the last time I saw him there was in 93. I moved west in 95 and the Bayou closed it's doors in 98. I loved watching him there the venue was so small it was all up close and personnel - like watching bar band that mingles with the crowd. Certainly, a burned memory.

Add me to the Fan List. I enjoy his facial expressions while he was jamming almost as much as the tunes .......... you never know what to expect.

I had the band play Bridge of Sighs at my wedding along with some Queensryche and Metallica. You werent a :head: if you didnt like Trower in the 70s.

That's a perfect description of what i think also.......Oh, and thanks for the Whiskey Train vid. Was a great listen this fine Sat. morning :thumbrig:.

Love the smaller places, i didn't know he was touring as much at that time, should have looked him up. Of course with marriage and the babies coming pretty fast by 1980, i saw very few live events after that, unfortunately......

this thread was pretty much fubar from the start (with a "Hendrix couldn't hold a candle to..." reference) but this finished it off lol.

No one could ever or will ever play like Jimi and, in fact, if it wasn't for Jimi no one would have ever started doing the things that followed.
Well, I shouldn't say that: the SECOND best guitarist ever, SRV, would have still set the bar for all the poseurs that followed.
