quick question here. first off i don't have any pictures of this so sorry....i found out today that the used pumpkin for an 8 3/4 that i have for my wifes car has a slightly rusty ring gear. it is just in one place on the gear. like got into some water and surface rust got on it. it did get slightly pitted, but very slightly. my question is will this cause any potential problems? the guy that is helping set it up says it will be fine , but may "sing" a little. what do you think here? anything to it?

If I had a picture, I'd would comment on it for sure.

By your description, it sounds like it would be OK. But I would still like a picture.

Not likely to sing if it is as described. The noise usually comes from bad setup or wear pattern issues. Should be fine but as Rob said.. a pic is needed.

i would but it is not here with me........by the sound of your skeptisium what possible problems could i be faceing?

Well, it's more of an issue of how much rust is there and I beileve the two of us would rather see a picture just so we are sure and on the same page. I have had rusty ring gears before and drivin them for years with light pits on the gear. But I want to be on the same exact page before I say go for it don't worry about it.

The metal is very very strong and tuff. It would be rare for one to break even if there is some rust on it.

If the rust was bad enuff, you could loose a tooth or 2.... That in itself is not the end of the world. The loose tooth could be real real bad. Locking up the rear gears and tires.

I'm a car inspector for the Long Island Railroad. I have seen similar sized chunks of metal (Tooth from a cars ring gear) lock up a set of wheels on a train trying to leave Jamacia station. (They main hub for the railroad in NYC)

Trains also have ring and pinion gears to each set of solid axle wheels. It happens, rarely, but a tooth will fall off and get caught up and lock up a set of wheels.

This is on a train. Each car weighs approx. 90 tons. Give or take a few on the car. If it is a bathroom car or not. etc........

Times this amount by a min. of 8 cars. 8 X 90 tons is A WHOLE LOTTA WEIGHT! And a little tiny thumb sized chunk of metal stops the wheel from turning.

With the car being and automatic with what I assume is a mild small block there is not much to worry about. Does this car ever wear slicks or see nitrous? If not and the pitting is only very minor surface rust it may just provide extra lubrication pockets...

i see.....well the guy is a "mopar " guy that is doing it and he didn't feel it was a consern , but did want to mention it. he has already set it up and put in it the rear. i think if he feels confident enough to do this then i feel like he is on the level. i just have never had to deal with this before and didn't know exactly which way to set on this. i think i will give it a shot as is for now. it will not be a drag car so it won't be getting thrashed on very much if at all. thanks for the input guys!
