seat belt questions for 72 duster

ok, some of you may have seen my restoration thread on my 72 duster.

I recently have just about got my interior finished up.

carpets in,headliner is in and so on.

couple questions though.

first off, I have a total of 6 seat belt mounting bolts,2 on the trans hump of the floor board (passenger and driver side).

one in each interior side of the rocker of the floor board ( passenger and driver side).

and one on each side of the ceiling (passenger and drivers side).

I know what bolts go in the transmission hump bolt holes.

but I still have the four others to contend with, my dilemma is ......out of the four bolts I have for the mounting locations,2 are longer and 2 are short.....my questions in,do the longer ones go in the ceiling or the floor and vise versa.

ok and onto my second part of the question.

I got my headliner up in place but I can't remember exactly where the seat belt clamps were placed in the headliner or how the shoulder belts were routed throughout these clamps.

if anyone has any pictures to give me a better idea in these areas I have questions about I would really appreciate it!.

Hey Jerrod, the longer bolts usually are reserved for a location where more than one seat belt is mounted. Usually in a bench seat application, the hump bolt locations will hold one half of a belt for the driver or door passenger, and one half of a belt for the center passenger. Same with the back seat, they usually have a center belt in 1970 and later cars. I can't remember when the big safety laws were put into effect but it seems to me that it was Jan. 1st 1971, so any car built after that date had much more seatbelt attention than the 70 and earlier cars.

As for the shoulder belt routing, a picture of that page out of the manual would surely show that application. Maybe abodyjoe will chime in and show it from his stash of pics!!

Sorry I can't help with any of your missing items, but I am not a "dusterdude"!!!LOL. Maybe I will be after a trip up north to measure that job though!!! Geof

well, it was originally a bench seat car....and it is a 72.

I just can't seem to remember if it had 3 seat belts in front or not.

for the trans hump bolts( I want to say all that was attached to each one of these were just a latch for the passenger and driver belts and no middle passenger......then again .....it has been about a year and a half since I have really paid attention to that area of the car lol.

P.S. I got mixed up.....I need to know what bolts go in the trans hump and what ones go in the ceiling i think.

I think the seat belt mechanism itself with the retractors and everything I left the bolts in the plastic housing so I would not lose them ( I want to say they have a torx bit bolt head).....so I think I can figure out where those go lol.

but its the other 4 locations I am confused on.

but being that you mentioned longer ones go in the hump for added belts, I am thinking thats probably where they go and IF mine had the middle passenger belt set up ....I either don't remember it being there or someone removed it long ago.

Ugh, My 73 had the 3 piece belts...

Stock config on mine was 3 front belts ( bench ) and 2 rear belts.

The short bolts are used for the overhead shoulder belt mount , the long bolts are used for the trans tunnel, and yes, the goofy torx bolts are used for the retracting mechanism.

Take a look at the front center latches where they mount to the floor, you'll see that the metal "bracket" at the end of the belt is wavy, and so is the set for the center front lap only belt.

I ended up swapping to the 75 style belts and moved the center front belt to center back seat and used the long bolts for the center rear where there are 2 belts mounted to one bolt. The wife and kids couldn't figure out the clip on shoulder thing to save their lives... pun intended :lol:
 
I was actually just looking at my belts.

all I have is as follow.

2 adjustable shoulder belts that mount to the ceiling ( one for each side).

2 short belts with latchs on the end that the lap belt latchs into (one for each side that mount to the trans tunnel).

and 2 lap belts inside the retracting mechanisms.

no center belt for the front seat.

SO ,either someone removed it or it never had it.

BUT I also JUST noticed before I read your comment.....on the two belt brackets that mount to the trans hump....I seen the "wave in each bracket"......I thought one of them may have been bent for some reason and then I checked the other and seen it was exactly the same.

so that leads me to believe maybe someone eliminated the center belt.

no big deal as I converted to bucket seats anyhow so I only need the two latches.

does anyone happen to have pictures of the seat belt clamp locations on the headliner?

I am getting ready to reinstall these clamps into my new headliner but need to know where they are positioned.

also a picture of the shoulder belt up inside these clamps as I can never figure out how to fold the damn things without a sag in the belt HAHA

being that I am PRETTY sure that most of you have seat belts in your a-bodies.....LOL.....any one got some pictures of the areas i mentioned above.

Ok so the way to tell if the center front belts were removed is if there is an ovalish diagonal hole in the plastic sheathing a couple of inches down from the latch, that is where the center belt would have come through the sheathing.

Seems like no one wants you to have seat belts :lol: event when I had the old ones, they always stayed connected to the lap belts so I can't help... sorry

nope, no holes in the sheething.

both the front passenger and driver side latch belts (ones that bolt to trans tunnel) have a rubber cover that go over the mounting bracket on the trans hump......one of these rubber covers is about 3 inchs long and the other is about 2 inches long.....otherwise there is no difference in them......just one hole in the back of each rubber peice that the mounting bolt passes through, a slit in each one so you can pull the rubber back and gain access to the mounting bolt and a slit on the opposite end for the belt to pass through.

maybe my duster didnt have a factory lap belt for the center of the bench? it had the split bench seat with the fold down center arm rest.

here is a link to the rubber covers I am talking about......one of which looks exactly like the ones picture and the other is just like it except an inch or so longer.

Ok I found a pic that has the locations of where mine were... but it's for the cardboard liner from my 73, and it's already been recovered and I can barely see the dents where they were...

The only pic I have wont help because its a close up. In 67 no post coupes the coat hook was above where the windows meet. In 68 they moved that coat hook farther back and put the seat belt anchor there.
Feel for it about 3 inches above the trim.

My bad , you're looking for belt clip locations, my 68 or 73 Valiant wont help. Good luck
 
Nope, I didn't bother reinstalling the coat hooks ( never use them ),already have headliner installed with seat belts installed, rear view mirror installed and sun visors and dome light and all.

Just need pictures of the seat belt clamp locations in the car on the headliner.

I wouldn't think it would take this long to get some help on the subject, it's been 3 or 4 days now I have been waiting to but it all back together.

Thanks to those that have tried to help though. I appreciate it!
 
See if these I just took help you DD72. These are on a 72 Demon, but I would guess Duster is the same.

I know what you mean about being frustrated asking for pics. I've been asking for /6 power steering pics for days too!!

I know I can basically put the clamps wherever I fell like, I just wanted to put them basically where they would have went factory so when my belt is all folder up in them it is all matched to the right length so there isnt any sag in the belt.

I have had alot of times on things more important where I needed pictures or answers asap ....but threads of jokes and political stuff and what not fill the boards up so fast that people don't have a chance to catch a thread that may be of some importance.....LUCKILY this wasnt as critical of a thread.

thank you too all those who have helped with pictures and info and helping me get my questions figured out, I REALLY appreciate it.

If I had a slanty I would take pics for you but I have a 318 and no power steering either.

( maybe somewhere in the future Joey could split the recent threads page in two......one side showing important stuff and tech questions and what not and the other side showing Joke threads and political threads and classified ads and what not?) just a thought.
