On my 904:

Adjusted the kick down to full line pressure at WOT.

It seems to shift a little early thru the gears when driving casually and kickdown response isn't neckbrackingly snappy and only at about 3/4 throttle.

At WOT it will shift from 1st to 2nd at around 3950 RPM and shift into 3rd at 4100 RPM

When shifting manually the engine isn't too happy above 4300 RPM

Could my crappy Carter 2bbl carb be effecting my shift points? If I adjust the kickdown any tighter it's going to limit WOT... I'm stumped. Anything else in the trans that determines the shift point?

I,m sure adjusting 1/4 inch at a time til you feel you are at the shift rpm your after will help.Trying to help?

The only way to modify it is with different governor weights/springs or different rate 1-2 and 2-3 shift valve springs. What you describe is pretty much the norm for most torqueflites. What are you wanting it to do?

I'm wanting it to shift about 500 to 1k RPM later...in each gear at WOT.

So say between 4300 and 5k RPM...

My engine code tells me my 318 is a 80-84 truck engine with a 2bbl. Once I've got my more spirited cam installed and the 4bbl TQ will that influence shift points?

This video got me thinking about the whole topic:

seems to work well....

Adjust the transmission throttle linkage such that the throttle lever on the transmission is all the way to it's stop with the carb at WOT and leave it alone. Shift points are a function of the governor and not line pressure.

4000 RPM shift points are about right for a stock 904 behind a small block.

If you are still running the stock 2bbl carb and intake, quit trying to get the engine past 4000 RPM. It won't do it. The tiny factory carb is the biggest restriction on the whole car (with the original single exhaust being a close second).

As stated above, call A&A they are a good Torqueflight shop and will help you get yours set up. But do the carb/intake first.

Thanks. My carb is junk indeed. I've got the intake and the 4bbl sitting right here next to me...time to get them in.
