shifter lock

ok i have a question for you guys that i have been meaning to ask. i have a 72 dodge demon 727 auto in floor with console. my question is should the shifter be locked in park with the engine off and key out? i can shift mine at anytime running or not and i feel this is not safe.

am i the only one with the factory 727 auto in floor w/console? i thought i would have seen an answer to this fairly quick........... :dontknow:

my 73 duster has a 904 and stock floorshifter and there is no lock on it, as long as a press the button on the top of the shifter i can move it, its normal...

even parked with the key not in it as well?! this seemes not to safe to me . i don't let my kids play around the car but i think that if they did they could move the shifter and car could roll. ( with brake off of course! ) that is my point.

think those shifters with the key locking them are later in the 70´s my 78 chebby caprice has a lock on the shifter.. , just a thought..

hey it was the 70's, just make sure all your shifting linkage is adjusted correctly. also make sure the linkage bushings are in good condition. should have no problems. don't worry be happy!

hey thanks guys.....don't worry mike i am happy! i am just thinking that something is wrong with this picture. i have only seen 1 other car ,a 67 mustang to be exact that you could just open the door ,sit down and shift the car out of park without a key or starting it. i figured by 1972 all cars would have a shift locking device on it to prevent this kind of thing from happening without the ignition key in the column.........

shifter interlock did not become the norm until the early to mid 80's mostly on imports. alot of chrysler products did not use them until the late late 90's as a matter of fact the jeep brand had some legal problems due to the lack of shifter interlock. hope this helps

My Dart's column shifter will not go into gear without the key in the ignition. If it would make you feel better, I'll trade my column and linkage for your column and floor shifter.
