Need some advice:

just bought a "B Body" 8.75 rear from a 69 charger with BBP axles and 10" drum backing plates, the axle tubes are solid and straight.

I have a 72 Duster with a 225 slant six, looking to replace the 7.25 with something stronger and a taller gear like a 3.23.

What the cheaper/best way to go?

Shorten the rear, shorten/respline axels, get a center chunk and rebuild it?
or sell the housing and shop around for a 8.25 a body rear complete?

any takers?? thanks for the help

The B body rear will work without much modification if you use the correct wheel/backspace setup. You need to move the spring feet in about an inch on each side and that's about it. Here's my Duster with a B body rearend... 8 inch rims with 295/50/15 tires. 5 inch backspace would be ideal these are 4 1/2.

I LOVE that look! Only problem is, I plan to keep this a slant six and it will be a driver/cruiser just worry about having a larger tire in rear then back in regards to a spare.

how much could i expect to get for a 8.75 housing with bbp axles and brake back plates??

thanks for everyone's help!!

If you aren't using wide tires the B body rear shouldn't be much of a problem under your car at all other than the spring feet being moved. If you want to sell it check with your local junk yards to get a real world local market value as shipping on rearends is a killer. B body rears are getting harder to find but the local yard price here is $150 pulled. Might look on closed auctions on e-bay also....

I have heard that its not necessary to even move the spring perches. The difference is only 1/2 an inch per side so you can spread your springs out and bolt it in.Wheel size is the main issue I think.

B body rears are a dime a dozen I was walking threw the swap meet at monster mopar weekend and found 2 complete b body rears with open carriers for $150 or less.

thanks for all the help guys, i have a lead on a 3.23 gear 489 case for 100 (been squealing) so I'll need to get it rebuiit, but since i have the axles and backing plates maybe thats a better way to go.

anyone know if the driveshaft needs to be shortened/lengthened to accomodate the 8.75 with a slant six?

thanks again

Early B- body 8 3/4 housings will bolt right into an A body.
I have a 67 Charger Housing and axles in my 74 Scamp.

A-body spring perches are 43 inches apart. Early B-body spring perches are 44 inches apart. the springs will easily flex out the 1/2 required on each side.

My stock 14X5.5 rally wheels just barley clear the outer fender lip with a 235/60R14 tire. I may have to trim the lip a bit to keep it from scuffing the sidewall during cornering.
