i have read several stories on how to time this car, and they all say different things. i would like to know how to really do it. i have already done cap rotor plugs wires, valve adjust. i would just like to know where to set it. thank you.

I have always done mine by vacuum, being that I had no timing marks to go by. Unplug vac advance plug vac gauge into manifold vac and advance to highest vac reading and back off 1" of hg. Always been perfect for me.

Start by adjusting the valves. No really you NEED to adjust them. Then I would check your damper and see where it says your at. I like 10-12' as a starting point. Slants like a lot of advance. Make sure your dizzy is working with the vacuum advance as a 65 may need service. Is the car still points?

Mine pinged a little at one point. It's still points for now I wanna get the stock electric ignition soon. I have the plugs gapped to .038. Right now I believe at idle it reads 10 atdc and does not change much or at all plugging vacuum.

Assuming your crank pulley's outer ring has not slipped relative to the hub (that happens; the two parts are separated by rubber that eventually separates) and the timing mark at "0" really actually indicates TDC on number-1 cylinder: warm up the engine, set the idle mixture and speed so you wind up with a curb idle of about 650 rpm (see links and info here), disconnect the vacuum advance hose and plug the carburetor nipple it came off, then set your timing to 7° BTDC and see how it goes. If you get pinging, back off to 5°.
