Small block mechanical trivia ?

I posted this question to help the newbies not make the same mistake we all have made.

Of the few small blocks I have assembled,I have never positioned the distributor according to the timing gear marks !!! This is the first time I've heard of this !

The first time I got my 'head in a jam' over this was on a 440, because I set the distributor in immediately after installing the cam. So I was "confindent," LOL, that the thing would fire right up. WRONG

I first learned the "finger in the hole" trick in the early 70's

The answer to your question as posed is 100% TRUE. You CAN install the distributor pointing to number one with the timing marks as shown, but the engine will be timed 180* out.

I figured somewhere in here you would catch this.LOL. My thought was you could install it with the rotor pointing at the sky if you put it on incorrectly.
