So do I have a rare 71 duster 340?

-
71 is the last year of the high output 340's... That's what matters most...

It does have the j81 spoiler code which I have taken off, repaired and ready for its Organosol black paint. From what I read, on 1000 some duster came from the assembly line with that option. The rest were a dealer install option??

Restored it should bring 22K maybe more, it has the right color in citron yellow, and a go wing and hood pins. Some will diminish some value since it is an automatic. Pics would help a lot. No matter the value, all 71 Duster 340's are somewhat rare as not many, especially in stock form survive.

My 72, 340 Barracuda[RARE], ran as well as any friends 71 cars. Just sayin....

I'm talking spec wise..

68-71 340's had 10.5 compression, forged cranks, 2.02 intakes.

72 340 had 8.5 compression, forged cranks, 1.88 intakes.

73 340 had 8.5 compression, cast cranks, 1.88 intakes.

Yes, some engines run better than others. Some early built cars may have gotten the last year's leftover engine with the higher compression... It can happen...

But spec wise, the 68-71 340 was the best years for stock engines... Those are the ones that set the reputation for the 340....

Inspection tag, Some cars had them and some didn't.

i would agree with 22k for your standard driver resto, maybe a bit more. Very few 71 demon/dusters get in the 28/30K area, the ones that do are usually concourse restos or very high option ones like 4-speed, black paint/orange interior type cars with all the correct stock engine parts. a big plus on yours is the buckets/console.

As far as I am concerned, all 340 A bodies are somewhat rare. Is it rare to the point it will make you rich? No.

Its rare in the fact its the last good year for a bodies looks and power wise, that's for sure..

73 Cuda with 4 speed had a forged crank. I have a no.'s matching one. Autos had cast crank

Heres the production numbers i found for 340 dusters..

1970..24,817
1971..12,886
1972..15,681
1973..15,731...

never knew the '71's were that low in production..'70-'71's still my favorite years:D:D

value will climb with passing years though
Is your uncle looking to make money on it? If he is probably best to sell it as a project car. Peaple overpay for a project but don't want to pay for a done car. You might get 25k for it if it's perfectly concorse restored, that means all original engine parts like the expensive carb, idle solinoid, air cleaner etc... When you get to the mid to upper 20's your now into nice driver condition B bodys like roadrunners, superbees etc..

The usual statistic on Muscle cars of the era are approximately 10-15% survived. That doesn't leave a lot of 71 Duster 340s, especially ones that aren't hacked into race cars, etc. I consider them somewhat rare, not one of nine type, but still rare.

The car was my uncles. It is now mine. I disassembled and documented 85% of the car so far as well as a thorough estimate of parts. On the upper side I'm looking at around 9k in parts and supplies to fully complete it. All labor is free by me. I was the shop foreman of a BMW collision center so it not like I don't know what I'm doing. I plan on restoring this and giving it to my daughter when she is 18. Keep it in the family. Start a hand me down tradition!
