Hi Guys,

I'm not sure if this is true but I have been told that Sox and Martin tested the yet to be released 426 hemi in a 1967 Barracuda Fastback formula S.
A couple of questions for anyone who knows.
1.Is this correct
2.Is there any photos or documentation of the test car to prove this.
3.What happened to it , if there was one.

Thanks.

Myth, Mystery and Misconception......

Three False Assumptions......???

In 1967,

Sox & Martin started the 1967 season by running the
* 1967 GTX '426 Hemi'.............................................SS/B
* 1967 GTX '440'.....................................................SS/E
* 1967 Belvedere II {RO 426 Hemi} w/GTX Lettering......SS/B

At the 1967 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals @ Cecil County Dragoway in
Maryland, rumors were flying around that they were testing both a 426 Hemi
and a 440 Super Commando wiith Max-Wedge Cylinder Heads and Cross-Ram
in a 1967 Barracuda for a possible run in A/MP for the end of the year.

Nobody ever saw the car.

hate to tell u this, but, the 426 hemi`s were being tested in late 63. were available in 64 superstockers. petty was kickin *** w/ them in 64-5-6-7-8. had a distant cousin used to drive test cars for chysler back when he was a pup, he said he would wear out a set of rear tires every 8 hr. shift on the hemis back in 63-4!---------bob:toothy7:

Famous Bob,

I think 'Formula S' meant it as Sox & Martin testing a 1967 Barracuda 426 Hemi for Super Stock in 1967.

The question was........Sox & Martin in 1967....

Note; Sox & Martin did run a 1966 Barracuda with a 426 Race Hemi in A/FX in 1966, and also in the #2700 lb. Gas-Injected Class.

Not in the A body. I believe that's what the original question was regarding.

Sox & Martin,

Did test a 1967 Barracuda 383 'Formula S' in November 1966, to determine if it would be 'competitive' in the upcoming SS/E Class for 1967 NHRA.

They only ran it for about a month with 'no success', as their 'new' 1967 GTX 440 {Also classed in SS/E}, and ran all over the Barracuda 383.

Their GTX 440 was running low-low 12.00's with ease, while the Barracuda 383 was
laboring in the 12.80's.

Can't find anything on the 426 Hemi Super/Stock Barracuda { Test by Sox & Martin in 1967 }.....

You are the most hardcore NHRA/Mopar fan I have read on any forum or talked to in person. And I thought I was sick. Well done.:headbang:

Drag Racing Mopars since 1965, I think I learned something over the years.

And, with little help from the Factory Techs....who always seemed to be
'Out-to-Lunch'

You guys are awesome, Thanks for the info.

Mr. 1967 Formula S

In 1967, Sox & Martin were busy 'barn-storming' across the Country with
their '3 Super Stock Cars, competing at all the National Events,
Match-Racing, as well as performing Car Clinics.

If at all, they did additional testing with a new Race Car , it was most likely at the end of 1967.

In October/November 1967, they did put together a 'new' and soon to be released 1968 '383 Road Runner', which was built for upcoming 1968 NHRA 'Stock Class' for E/Stock, as well as the '426 Hemi' Road Runner.

back in the day, i ran 67 belvedere GTX in superstock. it ran superstock D/Auto in nhra, E/auto in ahra. small time, mostly local, did set the ahra record at tulsa w/ a broken intake valve spring on # 5, I think it was.----------------bob:coffee2:
