As a resident of Delaware with homes in Kent & Sussex county, and a person who does a lot of bass fishing through out the mid-atlantic region, I travel a lot ! First, many towns/cities set up red-light cameras, now Maryland has set up speed limit cameras ! Seriously is this safety or scam? Four towns on the lower eastern-shore have speeding cameras reported 12/11/12 on local tv station WBOC. I understand the value of safety, but WBOC reported there have been issues with the machines working improperly citing innocent citizens, due to flawed calibration. Even red-light cameras have come under scrutiny. Some red-light cameras flash too soon, or the yellow light interval is too quick, and the reports of increased accidents at red light camera enforced intersections.
I'm quite sure that both of these traffic devices are here to stay. Forget that they are often flawed, they simply make too much money for the state/county/municipality without deploying actual police. They seem to be more like a cash register or ATM ! Who knows, maybe with todays technology they'll swipe your credit/debit card instantaneously, and you won't even know of the infraction until you see your monthly statement! Just some thoughts.

obviously, they're just a money-maker (i.e. scam).
They don't make a person slow down like visible police presence does, they just take your picture and mail you a ticket. That doesn't increase safety in any way (unless the 'patrolled' zones are obviously marked, which they almost never are, since that would prevent the cash from rolling in).

I have a problem with how they work. I suspect that there is a radar unit enclosed and when it sense's a preset speed or higher it triggers a camera which takes a pic of the so called offending vehicle.

My problem with them is that they could be tripped by one motorist, or something else in the background, and the pic be of another. Also, how often are they calibrated? There is to much left up to chance.

Scam, Maryland, leading the charge of big brother.
Oh, and you better learn where they`re located and you WILL slow down,
or you`ll pay out the yang.
You need to pay attention if a speed sign has a little photo enforced sign below it.
Tips I`ve observed.
Cameras on opposite side of road will not nail you, allot of people will slow abruptly.
They seem to give you a buffer of 10 mph, any more, FLASH!/PAY!
Some cameras disappear for weeks then reappear.
I`ve been nailed twice:protest:

Glad i don't live in Md anymore, although one Daughter and her family has been in Salisbury for about 18yrs. Also, dont these cameras ticket just the cars, no matter who's driving them? :violent1:

It's a big cash cow they are not for safety in my opinion.

Exactly. :wack: "We'll ban that book and T.V. show,
Forget that movie, no you can't go.
Can't sell that record, don't like that song.
We know what's right we know what's wrong.
Can't have abortions, what's yours ain't yours,
Just obey the laws.
Too young to drink, say no to drugs
We'll take your piss and blood.

'All the world's a stage you get the lead.
Ain't no way I'm gonna play the part of the fool,
There ain't no way man - no way!'

Bikers wear helmets, cars safety belts
You might hurt yourself.
We're watching out, We're watching out
We're watching out for you...

Well the new right's been at work some time
They ain't so new no more
Can you hear 'em knockin'
Knockin' down your door.
1984 has past, forget about Big Brother,
Welcome to the 90's where the government's your
Mother.

They'll tell you - don't do that.
They'll try and tell you - it's for your own good.
Big Mother is watching you
Mother's protecting you
Mommy knows what's right for you
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/s/scatterbrain/goodbye_freedom_hello_mom.html ]
They force their will on all the rest
They got the power, they know what's best.
The high court is stacked to the right
Old man on the left won't live through the night.

They'll tell you - don't do that
They'll try and tell you - it's for your own good
Big Mother is watching you
Mother's protecting you
Mommy knows what's right for you...
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
The Bill of Rights just disappeared
There it is - whoops it's gone!
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
All your rights just disappeared
Everybody stay calm.

First amendment casualties, but they won't be the
Last,
Kiss the Bill of Rights goodbye it's disappearing
Fast.

They'll tell you - don't do that
They'll try and tell you - it's for your own good
Big Mother is watching you
Mother's protecting you
Mommy knows what's right for you...
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
The Bill of Rights just disappeared
There it is - whoops it's gone!
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
All your rights just disappeared
Everybody stay calm.

@ OldmanRick..... Salisbury, Delmar has them for sure,I believe Cambridge, and Berlin are the other 2 towns, and yes you're right...they ticket the car, not the driver. If safety is the first priority, then Maryland should spend more money on routes 404 & 50 which are heavily traveled, and have a seriously high rate of accidents!

Thanks for the response Ken. Guess i'll be a little more careful next time i'm up that way, been about 4 or 5 yrs or so. I agree about the roads. The bypasses helped a little, but the spring to fall beach traffic will always be a nightmare. My inlaws lived between Selbyville and Fenwick, off 54 for about 25 yrs before they passed, and i learned quickly that the back roads were the only way to fly around those parts in the summer....lol.

they put up 4 of them bitches here and a year later they took them all down because they were nothing but a scam. they were rigged to go off before the lights actually changed from yellow to red...busted

Hope we don't have that crap here yet. Been driving in Charleston lately and i don't even know if they are there or not.

P.S. Got your PM Lance, Thanks

I do know that in the Spokane/ Coeur d Alene area there are at the very least SURVEILLANCE cameras in numerous places run by the state/ county. Evidently they don't have "ticket writing" capabilities, but they at least are "watching."

And Spokane went to "red light" cameras, and seem to be sticking by them. Some cities have REMOVED red light cameras, finding that rear end collisions actually increased with their use.

@67dart273, I hear ya ! Surveillance cameras are one thing, and I can see the value of them particularly in big cities. Baltimore/Philadelphia use them and they have been useful in crime solving! Still using devices to ticket people, especially flawed or improperly maintained equipment ( as many of us have spoke about) isn't fair. I believe, in a court of law we are entitled to a trial of our piers. Who are the courts going to select ? A bunch of mac books, or dell computers, will we be able to have the actual machine brought into court and cross examine it? I know that's far fetched statement, but when and where is it going to stop?

They claim it's for safety, but we all know it's all about the money...

Next time they ask for a milliage or tax increase tell them that they got that when they put up all the cameras and freed up the police time....

Easy way to "neutralize":

Get a broomstick, duct tape, and spray paint (black will make it appear as night).

Duct tape the spray paint can on the end of the broom stick.

Duct tape the "spray button" on the top of the spray paint to spray.

Hold up to camera and flash and cover them with paint.

Now nobody gets a ticket until they figure out and clean the paint off....

Around here they also found that they cause more accidents because people are jamming on the brakes and stopping at the last minute so they don't get a ticket. Sometimes the guy behind you planned on running it.... Ooops....

I am definitely not in favor of speed cams but it does scare the beejevies out of me seeing so many people of late just blow through a red light. Must be on the phone or something.

speed cameras....monitoring cameras...does not matter...as long as humans behind the wheels..there will be wrecks...lol

@krazykuda, You're right ! In the city of Wilmington De. they have a red light camera set up on Walnut & A st. and accidents went up after the camera was set up. Some accidents were caused by motorists slamming on their brakes to avoid getting a ticket, and others by motorists who were trying to beat the light. In my opinion, this is a very clear case of the yellow light interval is either too short or it is inconsistent. The speeding cameras fall into the same category with similar results, making an intersection or roadway more dangerous needlessly and state/county/municipalities a little richer, as many people have responded to this thread would agree. This are just my opinions.
