I've been out of the game quite a few years but looking to build a "Hot" 340 before I get to dam old to enjoy it. Currently build (2000) a mild 340 with stock bottom end, KB flat tops, Hughes HE3038 camshaft, Stage 1 ported iron heads, Headers, dual plane and Eddie 700 AFB. Thoughts on using the Hughes heads or getting aluminum heads? Thinking solid lift cam.... Maybe Racer Brown ST-21.

Any and all input appreciated.

I'm a fan of aluminum heads but I know nothing about the Speed Master heads.

Go with speed master just because iron small block heads are very heavy, speed master heads can be made really decent.

Sounds like you already have the Hughes iron heads.

If that’s the case, I’d just keep using them.

If you do have to get heads, buy new aluminum.

There is No Better Mopar Small Block engine
shop than Brian.

I have known him forever and he is a straight shooter!

Those heads sound like a Bargain.

Opt for at least the Bowl and Short Turn work,
it is always Money well spent! Even for a HP street car.

Only problem... " import" heads for small block Mopar.... hardly nothing available that isn't "import" parts....

I think if I was making the o.p.'s decision, and TIME isn't a factor, I'd wait till the black friday sale, and find out if cnc'ed speedmaster heads are offered, and try to buy them bare.
But if time is important, I'd consider the IMM heads. (I recall seeing what was offered a while back, I haven't checked into the current listing).

My current build in my 69 Cuda is a 340 with Speedmaster CNC heads with that racer brown ST-21 cam. M1 intake, 750 dp, 4 speed, 3.91 rear. Definitely has some get up and go.

Definitely looking at that ST-21 cam, will make some serious torque. I'm leaning towards an Eddie air-gap intake fed with E-85.

The stage 1 big block heads Hughes did for me 30 years ago were great! I wish I had kept them.

Depending on how HOT you want to be I would try the cam first with what you have.Heads can be done later.

If you are building a new motor for more compression then have at it.

Your current motor should be pretty hot for the street as is. I liked the 3038 big block cam as well.

Good thing you already have some decent iron heads……..

Just looked over on the Hughes site…….. and there weren’t any iron heads listed.
