Speedometer is acting on me pretty bad.

I've greased the speedo cable with white lithium grease and don't think thats the problem.

After removing the speedometer casing and cable i took it to the local auto parts store to get it replaced.

They had the correct one (aftermarket) for my car.

The plastic white tip was the same but the other end that screws on the speedo adapter on my auto. 904 transmission is different, mine is about 2 inches wide where the aftermarket one is like one inch.

I want to replace the whole cable and cable casing but not sure whats right.

Is it that maybe someone replaced the Speedometer adapter to a bigger one?

Below is a picture of the aftermarket cables, notice the silver end, its about 1 inchh. where mine is about 2. and looks like a nut which screws one the Speedometer adapter.

I really want a speedometer reading that moves smoothly like if new. What do i need to replace and fix for this? I plan on getting a used instrument cluster and using a used speedo. and want to replace the cable too but cant find mytyope of cable!

Should i replace the Speedometer adapter and use the after market cables?

(picture of Speedometer adapter from year one (wich are only for 4 speed automatics mine is a what? 3?) grrrrrrrr lol

help.

I have a similar delimema. I just need to take apart the dash for starters!
But;

Yes it is. It is to be done with a graphite coating. Never grease.

My 63 did the same thing!
then I found that the cabel to my speedomeeter in the car was not tightend all the way down lol

If the "thumbwheel" on the new one will screw on the adaptor it should be fine....as far as getting a new cable that is correct....I got one from Y1. it could be the speedo itself that is bad.....my old cluster, the speedo in it was nice and smooth with the new cable. I swapped to a different cluster with a 120mph cop car speedo.....and it was all choppy. Was told the damper spring or something in the movement was bad....I think redline gauge works can fix it. So you problem might not be the cable.

Hey, D318.

My '79 tranny has a different size than the /6 that came out of it.
Is the speedo end different as well?
Am I running into a problem here?

When i first got the car, the speedo needel moved fine but made noise in the cold and fast speeds. My curious self got the cluster out and "accidently" messd with the needle lol It came off and it got bent so it looks all ugly, and after that i couldnt make it move smoothly and makes a clickking noise.

NOW, yesterday I went under my car and found out the thumbwheel wasnt all the way in becuase if it were the cable on the plastic end would pop out more and wouldnt clip on the speedo...so should i just get the speedo fixed or replaced and the metal speedo cable to a right size and tighten the thumbwheel all the way in?

Where can i get a good speedo cable metal cable thing because the one i bought at the auto parts was a kit, the end that goes on the speedo i had to put it on my self and didnt quite know how and screwd it all up, it said to use the tool provided and hammer something in but didnt get it. lol

anyways. my speedo cable has the square end with a lil gold thik washer lookin retainer thing. where can i get one of those?

well im guessing my speedo itself is bad, should i take one out another cluster and replace it? or is it worth it spending a few billls and drive over to redline gauge works and get it all modernized llol they look nice. I live in SD, CA and could take a trip over to Santa Ana, CA. When i get the money of course haha.

It's a good possibilty that the speedo is bad.....I'd get a speedo cable from Year One and try that first...that will be the correct cable with the correct ends....and go from there.

I have no clue there...I have never seen the '79 speedo housings. Is it a 904 or 727? You should be able to get on of the older eccentrics that hold the speedo gear and use it so the cable matches up.
