Spindle Flaw Defect Yes or No

This a rear spindle from a 1981 corvette, disk brakes w/inner ebrake drum,10,000 miles original miles. We disassembled the rear end unit to replace the bushings and component cleanup.

You can see what looks like a casting flaw where the inner/inner race collar sets.

Is this acceptable?

Replace it if you can find a part. It is a weak point.

A million years ago when I qorked on cars for a living,if a replacement wasnt readily available or affordable we would have heated the dull red with a torck and then filled the hole with a mig welder.
Then grind/file/emery cloth it smooth again.

It waa fairly common for bearings to fail and damage spindles back then. We fixed far more than we ever replaced.

Thanks Mike, They cost between 70 and $200 depending on used or new. What do you think about having it welded? And machined costwise.versus replacement.

Even though it has already lasted 45 years, I couldn't justify re-installing something like that. And I'm a compulsively cheap b*stard.

That almost looks like a Weld Repair with porosity. Take and have somebody weld it up and lathe it... or buy a new one.

I like to save parts but for $200 or less, I'd replace. Hard to know what is going on inside.

Had a front spindle fail on an RWD rally car on a stage. Luckily, it was in a super low speed section, not at 90 MPH.

Doubt very seriously that part is cast !! looks like it was rough cut out with a torch to me ...

I wouldn't have it welded. It's a forged piece and should be whole to be strong. Welding is just lipstick on a pig. It is just filling the hole but not adding much integrity.

Hell no! I have old eyes and can see the crack inside of the hole in that thing. Have it magnafluxed and I'll bet you it will look like a spider web. Plus it's a Chevy part. You can buy it at Dollar General.

Zoom in. Plus that is a HUGE hole. There is no way I would put that thing in any differential. That is a door stop.

I did. The first dealership I worked at was an AMC/Renault dealer in the early 80's after the army. I have seen junk and that my friend IS junk!

I have never seen something like that from the factory. That really looks like a hot wrench was there but I didn't want to say that. I have worked on plenty of GM's too and never were they that bad. There has to be more to this story.
